shaggy manes are pretty good fried up....
The rains bring mushrooms to lawns and forests and fields...rain= mushroom hunting----we are having a few warm days so they should be showing up all the way through Febuary

As far as your question 3pointer, if you find someone who goes hunting local to you,  that is the best way..they have mushroom hunting clubs-just like ncka kind of,forums, get togethers etc

the best way is to find folks local who go a lot...imo

a quick net search turned up this for info  http://blogs.kqed.org/bayareabites/tag/mushroom-hunting/

I used to go all the time 20 years back, all the time, and had great spots and hiking buddies to help pick and haul out our buckets of chantrelles...different era...different area of ca.

Mushrooms are like abalone. Fun to hunt, harvest, and cook, but not worth the money to buy.

Dirty socks and cinnamon and that, to me , was exactly as they taste. Not a fan. But found loads up by Orleans.

I just saw those shaggy manes the other day. Didn't know what they were or if they are edible. Now I do. Time to break mushrooms demystified just to make sure.

Found some gem studded puffballs as well. Anyone try these?

I went on a walk of the property where I work just now and these were all coming up..picked a few

slippery jacks and puff balls ..I think  :smt005

and a pic of some  cypress agaricus from early in spring here

I'm going to have to pick up that book and give this mushroom hunting thing a try.  With the rains and nice days of sunshine I'm seeing mushrooms everywhere but have no idea on identifying them.  Except these in my neighbors front yard, morels right?

those are big deal among pickers...area specific too so if you saw them ,then you are in the right part of the country to find more...if there has been any fires around your area last year..go look there after it rains...wait a few days and go check forest fire hillsides...I have never been in areas that they grow-you are lucky
