Going to try Mendo for the first time this Friday around 7am.  Anyone interested or have any tips?

Hi notuna,

Do you mean Lake Mendocino or the Medocino coast?

Lake Mando, because I haven't tried it yet.  If the coast sounds bettr, I am game for that as well.  I live in the east bay, so either one is a long drive.  I don't have a VHF radio, so I try not to go in the ocean by myself(but usually do because of my work schedule).  Let me know which one you are up for.

Check out the fishing reports. Looks like the forebay might be a better bet if your looking for stripers. It is probably a little shorter drive for you also, about 80 minutes from Danville vs Mendo probably 2hrs +.

Hi GB2,

Is forbay aka lake Oroville?  I'm new to kayak fishing and have not try neither lake Mendo nor Oroville.  Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The O'Neil Fore Bay is next to San Luis Reservior just off of highway 152 west of highway 5. The Mediieros area is a good kayak launch site. Check out Mooch's photos of his stripers from last week. The stripers can get much bigger with some in the 50# class. I have fished there a few times with mixed results. The wind can be really bad so check the reports. Good luck!

Thanks for the info.  With the strong off shore predicted, the forebay might be a bit nasty.  I'll probably go north to Mendo.

Where and when do we meet on Friday?  Let me know your plan and we'll kayak fishing together.

Sailfish,

It's about a 3 hour drive for me, so if i leave before 5am, I should be there around 8am., if I don't get lost.  Have you been there before?  I was going to use Mooch's directions he posted under places to launch and camp. His directions mention a picnic table graveyard; we can either meet there on at the Ranger check in facility on Marina drive. Whatever works for you.

Where are you coming from?

An Offshore means the opposite of what you'd expect--it means calm at the Forebay. The windws at the San Luis Reservoir and the O'Neill Forebay are powered by the inshore flow from Pidgeon Point up and over Pacheco Pass down into the Central Valley. The typical Summer weather pattern is for the San Joaquin to heat up and pull the colder air over from the ocean via that route. But in the Fall as the weather pattern shifts, we get those days of offshore flows which stop that wind 'freight train'and predicate calm days at the Forebay. That, my firends, is the time to fish the Forebay. There is a 24-hour phone line to call +1 800 805 4805 to get the last hour of wind reports--call before you go. If its under 10--go for it! It jsut might be epic.

Good luck, be prudent, and be safe out there, but, above all, have a great time!

Quantity or Quality?  We ave been getting between 2-5 fish a day/kayak, many of the fish have been nice.  The forebay seems to produce #'s but the fish seem small to me.

I live in Benicia so it's about 2-hour drive for me.  If you want to, we can meet in Vallejo around 6am.   If it's inconvenience for you then we'll meet at the Ranger check in facility.  I never been there so will try to "google" or "yahoo" for the direction.  Wonder if the mobile phone work there, so we can contact each other in case one of us (or both) get lost  :smt003

Hi Jody,

Do you know where to get live baits?  I checked Yahoo Yellow Page in Ukia and found only 1 place: Ron's Grocery & Tackle but when I called the number listed it's no longer in service.

From my experience @ Forebay and your fishing videos I'd say you're right. I see a lot of people catching but I haven't seen anyone pull in anything larger than 5 pounds.
