From what I saw at the slam down, You surfed right over your Dad. Good thing he is cool. My Dad would have stuffed me back in the water and sand head first.

A really good relatively inexpensive SOT for surfing is the Kaos.  It used to be made by Wilderness Systems, but now I think it's made by Dagger.  I surf one of these and it's really fun.  It's a rough wave ski.  Look up wave ski stuff on you tube.
