The first green buoy is easily visible from the jaws. If you head straight at it you should be off the reef. Check your sonar frequently, you should be in 40-50 FOW or more if you are off the reef. As Alan mentioned, there are several shallow areas along the inside edge of the reef. Kings rock is usually visible and you can use it as a landmark. From kings rock to the first green buoy are a series of pinnacles which can be hazardous. The farthest south one is about 100' northeast of the buoy. The green buoy marks the safe passage through the reef and the boats will round the buoy just to the south of the buoy. I usually round the buoy about 20' to the north to stay out of the boat lane. After you round the buoy head northwest and fish the outer edge of the reef. There are less hazardous areas but keep an eye on your sonar because there are a few dangerous areas. There is a SMR that runs due west from Pillar Point so stay south of the point. I don't fish the reef north of Kings Rock. There are some big lings there but that part of the reef (Mavericks area) can be very dangerous and sharky too. If you are not catching fish around the green buoy head towards the red buoy.
