Got to Mendo and found my FF died.  Only read in 30 ft or less, otherwise everything disappeared.  Sean diagnosed it as Goop Bubble disease and he was right.  He said that with time, even if properly applied, Goop will slowly form bubbles that will enlarge and kill the signal.  It's been on 3 years so its not surprising I'd have problems now.

I know some have gone to a foam based mount.  Good for portability but I've heard others had problems with water leakage and returned to Gooping.  Wondering if anyones used Lexel for this.  The guy at Outback Kayak said they use it to cement foam bulkheads in place in SIKs.  It looked very smooth and thin on his demos.  I wonder if its thinner consistency will lesson the possibility of trapping bubbles as you slowly lower the transducer.

Any input appreciated.

I recently pulled my Goop mounted transducer from my P15 and notice a few air bubbles too.  I'm going with the foam based portable mount like I've used with two other yaks.  The trick is to get a nice snug transducer fit that doesn't leak water, so make the cutout for the transducer slightly smaller that the outline.... and use a generous bead of Goop or Lexel aound the base of the foam to make sure it's watertight.

I tried teh foam moutn but used (foolishly) marine silicone and it pulled loose enough to drain the water after the second trip. I was resigned to going back to straight Goop but then decided to try it again, that second time roughing up the hull more and using Goop. That was over a month ago and many trips since--still holding. I think foam is the way to go. Note: I use the gray high denisty foam you can get in kayak stores for bulkheads etc. and not the more air filled shiny kind used in pool noodles and packing foam. I used it because I didn't have acces to the other not because I preferred one over the other.
