Launched from the harbor with a slight east wind that gradually disappeared altogether. Glassy conditions out to the mile buoy. Not much action, so I paddled over to Natural Bridges. This would normally be a long haul, but it wasn't bad with no wind. Caught a few small rockfish and lost something very large when it broke off. Headed over to the Lighthouse to watch the surf contest. By this time, the wind had come up a little bit, but the swell had some big sets. Even though I was way outside the surf zone, I had to sprint out to avoid a couple of huge waves. It would have been embarassing to get creamed in front of a few hundred people watching a surf contest. By the time I got back to the harbor, big sets were breaking across the entire harbor entrance. Turned around once, sat out a set, then made it in with no problems. Another beautiful warm October day out on Monterey Bay!

I feel good for the cold water classic that they got good waves this year.

Yeah, they usually get cursed with flat water. The waves were great today, too.
