Mr. Miller,

I personally prefer to paddle and not pedal...but I do like the idea of having the option of doing both. But I wish you guys made the adventure WITHOUT the peddal system at all. It would have made my top 3 fishing kayaks.

I'm also a big fan of the Quest - I really dig the foot rest cause it's wide and long.....I think Wilderness System should do the same with their footrests :smt002

just my 2 cents....

The sports called paddling not peddling!

I thought the "Sport" is called "Kayaking". If it is confusing or a point of contention... I am happy to consider Hobie Mirage Kayaking as a sport of its own. No problem.

Glad to see Mr Miller on board too. :smt006

I " Peddle " a older Outback and thought I would be overjoyed with the revolution. I tried Franks the other day and was quite surprised with the difference of stability and overall feel vrs the Outback. ( still a nice Kayak Frank, it's just me and what I am use too ) The revolution of course feels a little more tippy, but the thing that got me the most was how the rudder system handle position makes it so you are working it under or close to your thigh. I've really grown accustom of how much room I have with the ridges and wide trays on the top sides of the Outback, along with having the rudder control at a easier position to use.

The trade off is, it's harder to swing your legs out to fight big fish, and maneuvers a bit like a old tank. I too still feel uncomfortable in the ocean with swells and launching/landing. I was hopeful that the Revolution or Adventure was going to cure these problems for me, but I'm not ready to give up the stability i have now. For the Ocean I'm looking into a Malibu or a Prowler. having used a Prowler, I have found it's easier to move about the deck, store equipment and self rescue on a SOT without pedals.

One problem I've had with my Outback from the start was the locking system for the drive. They are very difficult to set to full locking position. When I loosen them, I still can't get it locked all the way and it comes loose with normal pedaling. Do you have any suggestions?

Even with the criticism I have of the Hobies, I own 3 ( 1 Outback and 2 Sports 07' ) and plan to get another Outback. They are a blast and I enjoy fishing out of them.

Thanks for a Great Product and look forward to your new design concepts.

I.E....Better storage compartments for Rods/Drive system, wide hull that you have now with speed and maneuverability, maybe the design of the outback, but lower profile. I like the wide side tops with the trays and rudder control postion, Don't like how low I sit inside when I try to move about.

I know because I sit low inside is why it's more stable,  But hey, your the Engineers, that is just what I would like to see :smt002.........Danglin

Have you gotten retrofit kit with the longer bolts and the drive well reinforcement?  Depending on the age of the boat (Hobie forum thread here: [Outbacks with serial numbers A3753 through F2853] http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=5469 )

If you have one of the boats in question send an email to info@hobiecat.com with your personal information, boat model, color and serial number. They will send you a kit.

Yep... you should get a kit. The longer knob bolts will stop the knobs from flexing and keep the knobs tensioned.

When I first posted this my intent was to help others and to hopefully make Kayaking a more fun and safe sport especially for those of us who practice this sport in NCKA waters. The challenges I have seen that this post has stirred have at times gone sideways from it's original intent, which I breifly was guilty of also. So with that said I will include this thought of a great thinker from the 19th century and early 20th century in hopes it keeps this post as it was intended:

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which
cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance--that principle is
  contempt prior to investigation."
- Herbert Spencer, British philosopher

This is the same gentleman who coined the phrase, "Survival of the fittest" which has been taken way out of it's original context.

Again I want to thank those who came forward and put togeather safety classes and such for us to participate in as a matter of choice. Who gave their information and time freely with the intent of service of action and not words. I was very touched by those of you who came forward in this manner taking action rather than verbage.
Sincerely Frankfishing

Well quoted, Frank.  I would only add that willingness, honesty, and open mindeness should be considered indispensable.

In the roughest and rocky surf launches, likely the best Hobie Mirage models for paddling or pedaling  would be the Hobie Mirage Oasis Tandem, Hobie Mirage Revolution and the Hobie Mirage Adventure.

I too have always liked the look of the Adventure.  However when I watched the PALs Adventure in baja on a crap day and it did not fair all that well.  It would spear oncoming swells and wind waves and when we changed directions the stern was swallowed in following seas.  Just not enough rocker.  The result...lots for water in the hull through hatches that simply spent too much time underwater.  Paul had to pump out his boat several times during the day.  I had similar experience in baja on a Quest when it got poopy.  Hobie is into this the plum bow low-rocker thing, which is awesome on a flat day, but sucks monkey when it get ugly.  To be fair a Malibu Extreme will do exactly the same thing...again just not enough rocker for ugly days.

I also found them both to be really WET.  When paddling the Quest I used this to my advantage and kept half a load of sardinas alive by my toes for about 1.5 hours! After 5 hours though, my boys were wanting to get out of the pool of water and fish ooze.

On the upside I watched PAL make remarkable headway into a ferocious headwind that had me and Chef just trying to hold onto our paddles.  In a gnarly head wind, the Mirage drive will beat anything with a paddle.  Our only conselation was watching Paul get sprayed in the mug through his pedal drive blow-hole which was later named after a few too many Tecates as the "yak-gina". :smt005

On more thing, I always end up looking at boat from a mfging perspective and I will say that the Hobie boats have some the most complex molds (e.g. large negative areas) of anyone.  They must use some type of articulated mold to get these babies to release, anyways despite all of this trickery, the finish is outstanding if not remarkable.  Finally, the gimbaled foot rests and the potty hatch on the Quest are IMHO the best in the business.

A Quest with a tad more rocker would be my idea of a real nice boat.
