Which is the better way to go?
Buy a new one or rent the blue rhino tank from Lowes?

I buy with propane at the exchange and then fill up at gas station for half the cost of exchange when needed.  The exchange will take any old bottles as well so if it gets warn or rusted you can exchange. Or if you don't have time to take to refill you can exchange.  All of this is fine unless you want a bigger tank then you will have to buy one and have it filled.

the exchange tanks are not fully filled so you pay more per gallon for them vs getting it refilled. I only exchange when I need to swap out an expired tank

Check craigslist for tanks.  Also check BBQ's on craigslist.  Many are propane and a bad Q will have decent tank you can use.

Check feed stores for filling propane tanks.  They don't screw you as much as other stations.  I filled mine last week for $1.99 a gallon, no minimum.

I don't ever want to get screwed at a feed store.  :smt044

I usually go to Kamps in south Sac, last time it was about $2 a gallon, but like all fuel the price is probably higher now...

Blue rhino is an exchange not rental. Keep your eyes open for a used tank with the older valve. take that tank for exchange now you have the new valve and can refill it anywhere. those exchange tanks don't seem to get full. A refill at the station lasts longer. I have built up to 5 tanks looking for old used ones. people think they have to throw them away when they have the old valve. the gas company just updates the valve.

True.  I have many now because people leave old ones outside in garbage because they think they have to be thrown away.  You can save $20-$30 when you trade in an old one.

Some propane places charge a flat rate until you hit a certain amount of gallons.  Usually that is about the size of a propane bottle so you kind of get screwed.  Near me it is cheaper to do the empty for full exchange deal at the store instead of getting it refilled.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!
