Thanks for the info! I just went to the store in San Jose and bought two Ambush hoops. They seem to be simple and nice, I just hope they will not let crabs leak out of them. Btw, the sale prices are not marked on the shelf yet, but their computer gives the sale price.

As a newbie myself I bought the collapsible square trap with the bait cage and harness with rope and I think it was worth it it's not the expensive for a couple of setups and then you can decide what to replace it with when you eventually lose one ;-)

I ran one of the collapsible round Pro Mars in my day string last year.  The rest were the rectangular Pro Mars.  All the traps seemed to work with about the same level of effectiveness.  The round one is heavier.  That's not necessarily bad, after all, I add extra weight to all my pots anyways.  I do find the rounds more difficult to collapse/uncollapse  The one bonus to it is that I sat it on the bottom of the stack on the back deck.  It's wider profile provided a good base to stack the rest on and keep them from slipping around.

Allen, what is your evaluation of the Ambush hoops compared to the rectangular and round Promars in terms of catching crabs? I like their simplicity (nothing to setup) and stack-ability, and decide to give them a try.

I tried the promar eclipse hoop for the first time last year, its similar to the ambush style.  I thought it worked great.

I know its not ideal for long soaks since it has an opening, but I still managed a couple keepers letting it soak 3 hours.
If you ain't first, you're last.

I worked both the Eclipse and Ambush last year as well.  For the Eclipse, I zipped tied the legs to make it more rigid, and never broke it down.

I ran these hoops last year mainly because I like to search for the crab and then concentrate my pots once I find concentrations or crab.  I thought the hoops would work better on the initial short soaks.  You know what?  I didn't find that they really work any better than the the rectangulars.  But I'm not sure they worked any worse either.  What I did like about these is that I'd stack them on top of the other traps, and they helped in storing and containing buoys and rope.

It's kind of interesting that the lineup of pots I was using at the end of the year was chosen mostly due to stacking considerations, a collapsible round on bottom, rectangulars in the middle, and conical hoops on top.

Thanks Won and Allen for sharing your experience. Since there is no clear winner, I am going to use two collapsible rectangles and two Ambush hoops (they should stack up pretty well), and be serious about crabbing as this is going to be my second years :smt044
