Why? This would have been a legal nightmare to enforce. There were ramificiations beyond the AR 80% crowd. What about all the AK flat benders? Or historical arms that have no serial number.

Because I haven't seen much common sense in the political world these days. A magazine release that requires a tool is legal. Adjust the screw a turn and no tool is needed. What sense is it to pass a law that requires a tool only for the people that mean no harm? A law could require serial numbers on guns that are not historical. I don't know what an AK flat bender is.

Maybe clarify your stance on common sense if this should have been signed or not signed. ARs using 80% lower recievers. AKs use flats that are bent in to recievers.

People intent on doing bad things aren't going to custom build AR/AKs. They want available and cheap firearms. This would only impact people with skill and passion for firearms. I can buy a stripped 100% lower for 50 bucks vs. about the safe for an 80% that needs skill, tools and time to finish milling. Criminals can buy a complete AR out of the back of a car in Stockton for $300. Which route are they going to take? This does not protect the children.

AB1014 is scary but that might help some people.

To clarify one point in the article, one only needs a jig and drill press to complete an 80%.

One thing I've noticed about Jerry Brown is you can never tell what he's going to do. He's just a guy with a bunch of different opinions. That's the way it should be.  Elect the man not the party.

I would like that if it were the truth but he is Probly motivated by other means playing political games rather than having honestly different opinions.

Someone who has the plan to build an illegal configured ar isn't going to get a serial number anyway so it does absolutely no good anyway.

And it's impossible to enforce
Where did he go george

I pm'd traildad to apologize if I came across as a jerk. My opinion is this bill would be stupidity signed in to law. Gun serial numbers do nothing for crime prevention or solving crime. It just creates another penalty for otherwise good people.

Other than making good people criminals, all these new laws do is make it so they can add more time to a criminals sentence if they get caught.  They know that no new law will stop them from committing crimes, but they must also do something to satisfy their donors.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I don't think we are on opposite sides of this issue. No apology needed. I to was trying to say how ridiculous some gun laws are. A magazine release that requires a tool to be legal. But it only needs a turn with a screwdriver to become a finger press magazine release. It's a stupid law because all law abiding people have to suffer using a tool. Anyone that wants to shoot up someplace can convert it to be illegal just before they use it and are not inconvenienced at all. No inconvenience for the criminals and a pita for the rest of us. I was surprised Gov Brown didn't sign the bill. Not because I thought it was an effective law, but because I didn't think, in this gun control climate, there was any gun control law that a democrat wouldn't like. As far as his reasons for vetoing the bill? Political donations? Quid pro quo for republican support on some other issue? Because he considered it reasonably, logically and dispassionately.....Nah!  :smt044
