I'll offer instruction in wheeling yak and gear down the beach a few miles and back and trolling it several miles as well as diving off of it.   :smt001

Good to see you on here, Michael.

You should hire Eric. Forget being a more efficient paddler. Learn how to catch fish. Eric will give you a day full of advanced open ocean kayak instruction, and you get to take fillets home. A quality guide like Eric will cut years off your learning curve.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I enjoy at least one day per year of surfing / crashing / and general playing in surf conditions at MBK. No fishing gear or electronics. Just good old playing in the waves in my fishing kayak. It is very fun and great practice for fowl weather launching and landing. You don't really need a class, just go play.

Forget being a more efficient paddler. Learn how to catch fish.

While I value the expert advise that is shared here, I still think that I need a stronger foundation in my basic skills. I would like to be a better paddler and Coach GoPro has showed me that I have some work to do before Im ready to get "advanced". I need help.
Spoke with my preferred outfitter today and we are going to set up a class for me and a few compadres.
I wish that I could go paddle in the surf a few times a year and call it good, but I am in my 40s with injuries stacking up and I have to work just to maintain.  Ive been reading my paddling books, studying instructional videos, and I even practice paddling without taking any fishing gear along. Im just that guy that needs to put the work in to be good at something.  I plan to keep working and looking to the NCKA elite kayakers for direction.

I also have no doubt that fishing with Abking on a guided trip is a blast. Id be up for that too.

Thanks for the thread Bink. It motivated me to get on the phone and find a class.

I agree 100% with what Terry says above, and I'm nowhere NEAR as good a paddler as he is.

I want to be better, stronger, faster, more efficient and more competent in the surf and rough water, and think there is a limit to how much I can improve through trial and error and getting out there by myself...which I do as much as I possibly can.

Jim

I agree as well.  I've been working with my local outfitter as well to put together a class that will suit my needs.

Yesterday, I took a private lesson from Matt over at CCK in HMB.  It was four hours long and covered whatever I was interested in working on.  I got a lot of great information out of the session.  Worked on a variety of strokes, sweeps, scull, quickly stopping, low brace and forward stroke.  Got some real good suggestions for improving my forward stroke.  Spent about two hours on that.  Then we went out onto open water.  The day was really choppy with some pretty big swell (Mavericks was breaking).  Went over to the cove next to the breakwall and practiced surf landing and launching.  Then spent some time trying to surf the top of a wave.  After that we spent some time in mixed swell taking waves over the side and practicing bracing and dealing with pretty rough conditions with waves coming from multiple directions.  Finally, I learned to use my paddle to help me swim back to my kayak.

All in all it was a great day and I learned a lot.  The cost was $179 for four hours of instruction.  In my opinion that's a lot of instruction one on one.  If we can six folks together they can do a custom class for $99 per person for (I believe) a full day.  Need a full day due to size of class.  I'm willing to set something up if anyone was interested.

If I can get six folks together, I can put something together.  If you can let me know convenient times over the next month or so, I can see if I can arrange something that we can all attend.

Saturdays are usually very good for me.  if there is anything on surf launching and landing would be better also.

Cool, it looks like there is enough interest that we might be able to set something up.  I have queried CCK about scheduling, but it would be good to know what your folks schedules look like over the next one or two months too.  You can either reply here or PM me the information.  Thanks!
