Great pic's,  WTG James,

Are you going to smoke it?  I've heard once there in the river and starting to change, its best to smoke it. I don't know if it true or not, I've only caught one in the river years ago.

I smoked it.

It is kind of depressing to think that a big fish only has that much meat - but it's true...  That fish probably weighed quite a bit more in the ocean, before its head got bigger and its body leaner.  The 38 was the same length as yours, but it was so fat I got 21# of fat-trimmed and mostly boneless freezer packs.  The 23# ling yielded one big gallon ziploc full of bonelessness, so maybe about 8-10# or so.  Pound for pound I think 24" lings or fatty black rockfish yield good amounts of meat compared to some of the larger specimens or other species like reds...  Let us know how it cooks up, because I think consensus is to smoke a colorful spawner like that.

I caught four clams with even one double hookup on a Kastmaster!
All that after scouting the whole American River on Saturday!
I went with my intell, but next time I'll tag along with the locals. Geez. :smt013
I tried using night crawler, frozen minows, artificial salmon eggs with piece of worm, rapala, Kastmaster, and wet flies on a sinking tip. Should have went to flashy lures much sooner.

As far as answering the question: "Is this the run?". Comparing the recent historical salmon count at Nimbus about 9,000 returning in the fall. I saw about 75 in the fish ladder and guessing 500 in the opening waiting for the gate to rise. I think the 75 are incredible jumpers.

Nice Fish!!!

Another recipe for the darker fish is to chop up your fillets, mix with an egg, breadcrumbs, salt/pepper/cajon seasoning, olive oil, and you'll have some great salmon burgers.

Craig, Sunny, Gabe, SteveO: how was the paddle from the pump back up to the ramp?

Craig told me he went up river a ways, how far did you go? Did anyone else go up river?

I might go to Howe again this weekend, but plan to stay in the area.

Thanks, Al
