Brian winning 3 derbies is no coincidence.

No secret to their success...hard work.   They pre-fished the site 3 weeks in a row.  Its what the pros do...guess its cause it works!

Hey Sean don't give away my secret!   Actually, Jim and Naoaki did most of the prefishing for us.  I only managed one prefishing day at Ocean Cove and went south then, probably where you were fishing.  Jim and Naoaki reported doing better to the north after their second trip so in that sense I did benefit from some prefishing.

I found a nice slope that went from about 60 ft to 100 ft deep and ran parallel to the coast a couple hundred or so yards out.  It turns out that the wind was pushing us in that same direction so we managed some nice drifts near enough to this structure to attract some fish. Luckily the structure wasn't too rugid and we managed to lose only a couple rigs.  I think the drift worked really well with Jenna's hitch hiker system, but not as well (obviously) with my large hexbar method.  I might have done better with the drift had I been using  some really large 6 oz + swimbaits.

Anyway, I think my secret is mostly just plain dumb luck.

So Brian, if you win another tournie will you be too embarassed to enter any more?  When are you hosting one?

I was just talking to Jim "InSeine" Hobbs.  We've been mulling over hosting one for quite some time now on the Sonoma Coast.  Our latest thought is maybe do a crab and rockfish tournament this November/December while both are open.  Lings will close at the end of November so that would have to taken into consideration.

The trick is the marine weather, the Sonoma Coast isn't easy to launch even on calm days.  However, we could move things down to Doran Beach and Bodega Bay which is somewhat more protected.

As for being too embarassed to enter another if I win again, I don't see that happening (the embarassment bit).

Anchor Bay might be a great place for a late season MBF tourney.  With the south facing shoreline and easy launch in Chicken cove, combined with apparently abundant rockfish... and I'm sure the campground isn't all that full that time of year.  Great facilities at the campground too...  just something to think about... probably a more dependable spot to get on the water than a lot of others.

Indeed.  I spoke with them about it at one time in the past, and there was never enough room, and it was pricey.  A day use alternative could work though.

Sean,

Thanks for the pics.  I know Jenna will be psyched to have one of her in action.

I went as the official cheerleader for NCKA at the Randy Fry tourney. I didn't have time to get anything ready so I didn't fish. Guess it worked for everyone. Congrats Jenna and Brian and Sean and Jelly.
I had a great time hanging with the NCKA crew and meeting some new faces; Squidly and Rockaway.
The Ocean looked pretty calm from the photo below.
I got to try Uni ( sp?) for the 1st time; as fresh as fresh gets.
On the way home I stopped at a fave place of mine just south from Ocean Cove; Russian Gulch. Sure wish I had my kayak then. Check out all the birds diving like torpedos about 300 yds off shore.
I want to thank Sean W. for leaving early. I know you were tired bro; but they called your name for one of the raffle prizes ( must be present to win ). Since you weren't they pulled another ticket...MINE!!!!! Too bad the T-shirt didn't fit me. :smt005
Even though I didn't fish this time, I still had a blast hanging out with the crew.

Great Uni and coast shots and the pics of Jenna fighting and Sean's Dad beaming started my day with a smile too.  Thanks for sharing folks!

Had a great time fishing with Eric, Sean and Jelly, as always.  Caught all the usual suspects including a nice vermillion near Stillwater Cove, had a great hit on a hitchhiker but I guess it tore the small blue rockfish off the hook.  No other lings. At about 12:45pm, I knew one of us was bound to hook a ling, and bang Eric gets hit and lands a decent keeper, we started to hightail to the launch, pretty funny actually, I guess we both knew we weren't going to make, so we kept fishing. Drift started to get really fast and we were really hungry so we called it a day. I did catch a couple nice size yelloweyes and Eric caught one also. We ran into them last year in the same spot off some of the pinnacles northwest off Stillwater Cove. Sorry, no pics , don't have a camera (that I'm allowed to take on the kayak).
Eric, lets do it again next year and let me know whenever you want to fish or dive on the coast!!!!!
