I don't want to start an argument but this needs to be said.

I've never carried a weapon while fishing, however if I was in the back country fishing streams I would want to. The facts of the matter are these.
1. Open carry is illegal in the whole state of California. Fishing or not. I agree a pistol carried owb is ideal for back country trips.
2. Dfg has deemed the need for carrying a firearm while fishing is warranted, however the state leaders hae made it illegal to open carry this is their attempt at appeasement.
So they allow concealement while fishing.

In my opinion this is the conflict that we all have to deal with if deciding to carry while fishing.

Allen - If you are in an area with others around, wouldn't you say your chances of a bear/lion/mugger encounter would be pretty minimal? Probably no need to have that gun with you whether it's concealed or open.

I carry because of those guys.  I need my .357 binkie!

No. I would not say that.  There was a lion attack at my local urban hiking grounds a few weeks back.  This was in the middle of a Sunday, prime after church hiking hours, and a kid got attacked.  If it can happen here, and under these circumstances, it can happen anywhere.

I can't think of ANY benefits to CONCEALING that weapon...

To minimize the risk of the weapon being forcefully taken away, by an unsuspecting wouldbe mass-murderer using the forrest as refuge from the law (like Eric Frein), while your fishing at your favorite stream...

1. Open carry is illegal in the whole state of California. Fishing or not.

I'd like to weigh-in on this statement :smt006; it is not entirely true :smt003.

This is right out of the "California Department of Justice - California Firearms Laws Summary" page 11; you can technically open carry an "unload" firearm will while hunting/fishing as long as it does not conflict with this:

Have the open carry laws changed since 05? I researched it back then and open carry was allowed in counties with a low population. You couldn't carry in LA county but you could in a lot of others, at least in the rural areas.

Yes.

This has changed since 05. I guess you need a permit now.

Summary
California is not a traditional open carry state. Open carry is generally prohibited except in unincorporated areas where the county has not made open carry illegal, or, pursuant to a CA open carry permit issued and valid only in a county with a population of less than 200,000 persons.

Carrying a shotgun while hunting fowl is not the same as having a handgun while fishing!  Why do you need a hand gun to catch fish?

The need to carry a concealed handguns is like the "adult" version of a baby needing the comfort of a pacifier in their mouth.

For me security consists of having a couple credit cards and cash in my wallet. In my 50 years of fishing that is all I ever needed to be secure whether on the shore or on a boat.

I'm honestly a little surprised at the lack of hate mail you received for this.  I guess it isn't wintertime yet.  Try again in January.

I'll let my buddy know that carrying a gun is not needed, even though he was robbed on the American river while fishing in day light in a popular area.

If you don't like the idea of a person legally carrying concealed then fine, but do not consider it like a baby needing a pacifier.  What an incredibly ignorant statement.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I was gold panning on the Trinity River alone a few years ago. I wasn't paying much attention what was going on around me and the noise of the river drowned out any sounds. I looked up and there were two guys standing at the edge of the water about 15' from me. They looked strung out and mean.

Instinctively I knew they were trouble. I stood up and looked at them but didn't say anything. Finally, one of them said "Is that your truck over there?" I said "Yep". A long silent stare. The other one said "Do you have any money on you?" I said "nope". Another long silent stare. "You sure you don't have any money?"

I said "Hey look, all I have in this pocket is my truck keys and in this other pocket is my pistol". I pulled it out so they could see it. We stared at each other for the longest time and without saying a word they turned and walked down the river. I got the heck out of there and reported what happened to the Sheriff's office.

If I had pulled out a pacifier I believe they would have bashed my head with a rock, left me for dead and stole my truck.

You can pass any law you want, but I have a God given right and responsibility to protect myself and my family, and I will.
