Hey Alex,

You've only learned about some of the members that happened to comment.

I have friends from all circles and have found it best to not try to debate these issues with people I want to have friendships with.  One of my friends is as pro gun as they come.  Believes in absolutely no government regulations for firearms.  Another friend is from Holland and is as anti gun as they come.  I'll never convince either of them to come meet me in the middle.

For me NCKA is about sharing kayak fishing with other kayak fishermen.  I don't care if your boat is blue or red, let's go fishing!

Josh

I fully agree with this.  Don't judge the rest of NCKA based on what a few members have said on this thread, or any thread for that matter.  I'd think most choose not to take a stand on these type of discussions because well...the lynch mob mentality that we all have when a touchy subject arises.   :smt044

I will not comment on this topic, but I likes me some guns.   :smt003

I agree with you guys.

Not about guns though. I won't comment on that. Unless we're talking spear guns or the new bug-a-salt. That thing is bad ass.

I'm pro gun. Been around them my whole life. I'm comfortable firing just about anything I get my hands on. Its other people with guns that scare the crap out of me. I've been shot at a couple times but always had the upper hand in firepower and manage to supress the situations or scare the thugs off. I don't concel carry and often travel alone in sketchy areas. I always figure if I need to carry, I want more than a little 9mm and 10 rounds. I try to avoid others with guns even if I know them. I only wear a vest only at gun ranges. Not for the fear of an intentional shooting, but most people are stupid about gun safety.

I tend to think of myself as a level headed guy. No guns and booze. No guns and crowds. Guns aren't for showing off. I don't talk about what I have cause I only have 1 old rusty shotgun that not even Elmer Fudd would shoot. I keep it inside of a safe in a safe.

I shoot for the enjoyment of testing my skill and love the big bang of my 1 rusty shotgun. I once had anti gun nut run in front me while out on BLM land and get in my face about how guns are dangerous and I was endangering her safetly! There was no explaining how stupid it was to run in to a small dead end gully obviously setup as a range with mutliple people actively on the firing line. I used the Allen approach and asked if she was along all the way out her in the boonies because that obviously wouldn't be very safe with crazy people around. The angry looked turned to fear and she quickly departed.

If someone has a history of violence or self harm, I agree that they should not have access to or own a firearm. For how long? Who determines when they get their 2A rights back? That is the tough part.

I never responded in anger and don't think anyone else did.  Remember it's hard to really know someone's intent reading a few post. You can probably tell if they are pro gun or not but that's it.  And I am not trying to convert anyone or impose my views. Like I already said, it's your choice period.

Yes I know people who have committed suicide with a gun, but don't believe not having access to one would stop someone determined to end his or her life.  We had a couple folks threaten or drive off cliffs this last week.  Where there is a will there is a way.

Same goes for having one.  If someone wants you dead they can kill you without you every knowing it is coming.  A gun comes in handy when a dumb crook gives a gun owner enough time to react to a situation.  I believe in being prepared for that scenario but would not insist on someone taking my views.

Sometimes it nice to hear others views.  Not necessarily this time but that's what makes this country great.  The right to have them and the right to express them.

So the weather and waves suck in Mendo.  No fishing for awhile for me.  This is when the tuna will come close to shore.

Angry responses?
Nah, just a little passionate.
Sorry if it wasn't all flowers and kisses.

The problem I have with the "anti" crowd is their desire to ban what they don't approve of. Guns are inherently dangerous. No doubt about it. Should we ban everything that is dangerous because a mentally disturbed person might do harm with it? Or is it just those dangerous things that don't serve a truly "useful" purpose. You don't need a gun to catch fish, so there is no good reason to carry. If there are dangerous parts of town, we should all know better than to go there, so we don't need guns. We are all at risk of being harmed or killed by our fellow citizens. It is a part of life. Drunk drivers, sleepy drivers, distracted drivers, lousy drivers etc. Should we ban the car or the dangerous behavior? What is a greater threat to you and your family, guns or automobiles. If the "anti" people could simply say, I don't like guns so I'm never going to touch one. Instead they say, I am afraid of guns, so you can never touch one. As a society we need to learn that we can't legislate the world to be free from danger. We need to learn this soon or we will become a total police state without the freedoms to even drink a large soda if we want to.

The bottom line is the antis aren't going to change their position and the pros are not going to change their position so perhaps it would be better-just my opinion- to drop it and go fishing instead! .:-)

I got an answer of sorts from DOJ on concealed carry while fishing. I asked what was considered "while fishing". Since you might encounter wild animals on the way to and from, could you carry loaded on the trail? Their answer was it is up to whatever agency that manages the land. So you would have to check with the rangers in charge to see what their policy is. No more confusion! :smt002
