Launched this morning at 0645 just before the sun came up. From the weather reports today was suppose to be a beautiful day and boy was it nice. Flippinphil and I started to drift with the outgoing tide and hooked into a few small tigers (released).

At about 1130 we switched over to  trolling rigs as we neared buoy marked 6 at the entrance to the old naval yard. As we turned the corner of the rock wall Flippinphil took a nice hit to his Kastmater troll and the fight was on. He got this very strong fish to the Kayak several times but with no color. Both of us thinking he hooked into a nice size stripper that loved to run.
On about the fourth try to land this beast we finally get color. And Phil lands this nice looking 32" 14# SF Bay Trout :smt003
After several attempt at once netting and twice gaffing we land an elusive salmon.

i believe you can gaff a legal salmon.  not permitted to keep it if caught on a barbed hook though.  last weekend i saw a BIG one jump off alameda while shark fishing.

Wow!!  Nice and silvery too!!  Maybe I should plug spinners at the rockwall since Rodeo and Benicia have been a bust so far...

You can't use barbed hooks in the bay?  I thought barbless didn't apply to the bay and Delta.

Nice catch!

Caught on a barbless 4/0 single barbless  hook which was traded out for the triple. When the fish came on board the hook popped out on the deck. :smt001 Phil loves this set up. 1 oz. kastmaster chrome then trades out the treble for a single 4/0 for salt with a bucktail tie. I have to admit that I shake my head at him everytime he pulls in a nice fish.
I have been with him when he has pulled in Nice size Ling Cod in HMB with the same set up. :headbang: I challenged him yesterday to try that set up on a sturgeon :smt003 He told me how he would approach  setting it up :smt001 Got to love these retired NASA guys.
Thanks for reminding me about the DFG will review again before heading out for these fish. Nothing worse than getting spanked for regs, that are public knowledge. Ignorance of the law is not a defense I believe is how the court would present the states case.
Nothing like the sound of Fish On !! Nothing worst then, sign here, on an O.R release as your equipment is being towed away.:crybaby2:

So let me ask an obvious question: Suppose I catch a Salmon on a barbless lure. then decide to fish for Stripers. I would guess: 1) I have to use barbless lures tehreafter or risk gettign cited even if I am no longer targeting salmon and 2) Having barbed hook in possession is okay--they jsut cannot be in use.

Any takers on an answer?

Marmot - correct on both counts.  Also, saw a post on Coastside that some guys caught a salmon trolling an FBR for Halibut on the Berkeley flats just the other day.  Maybe Alameda/Berkeley is the new Cal City!!
