I've been asked on more than one occasion to cook or BBQ at friends events.  And every time I do this salmon, people are just blown away by it.  The funny thing is, it's only a couple of ingredients but tastes like a million bucks.

1 Cup soy sauce
1 Cup maple syrup
(a 50/50 ratio regardless of amounts)
1 Tbsp olive oil
Fresh cracked pepper

THATS IT!  Combine the soy, syrup, and olive oil, add the salmon, and if you have the time let it marinade for an hour or two before baking or *BBQing it, but I've done 15 minutes and it still turns out great.  Load them up with fresh pepper and you're good to go.  I like to add crushed hazelnuts on top (or toasted sesame seeds) as well, but again, totally not necessary.

* if BBQing, use tin foil or it will flare up something fierce from all the sugar in the syrup.

That's very similar to how I BBQ my salmon. My variation:

-Brown sugar instead of maple syrup (I'll have to try that...)

-Cedar plank instead of foil on the BBQ.

I also sprinkle the top with sesame seeds before grilling for a little crunch.

Can I cut up an untreated cedar fence plank from Lowe's/Home Depot for this?  It would be much cheaper than buying the cedar planks marketed specifically for bbqing salmon.

Absolutely. As long as its untreated, you're good to go. As you said, cheaper than buying the pre-cut planks sold specifically for planking salmon.

Awesome, I can't wait to bbq salmon now.  Thanks!  As far as I know, cedar fence planks are untreated, since they're naturally rot-resistant.  I'll double check with the employees when I buy them.

I had thought about that, too, but opted to stick with the ones MADE for cooking.

Ever visited a saw mill?

From my personal experiences touring mills, they are mouse/rat infested, cutting oil/lubricant splattered establishments staffed by big dudes spitting chaw and dripping sweat. Their products are just fine for building fences, but I don't think I'd want to cook food on them...
