I have yet to get the cuda 12 on a river. Working where I work, I hear a lot of reports and see a lot of pictures. I had about 5 or 6 guys through out my day tell me that Howe is hitting hard with chromers and the pictures certainly showed it. Most were caught on a gibbs or p line lasers in various weights. My dilemma here is this, I would like to not go alone as I have flipped this kayak with ease on a calm lake before, and the second is much more noobish. Where do I launch?

you launch at howe access and paddle downstream.  As for the flipping problem, bring out the bare minimum with you. you don't need a ton of gear for salmon, and make sure you bring floaters for your rods (as well as PFD obviously).

Only spot you have a risk of launching is right at the launch going down

Don't launch there, launch to the left of it in the sandy beach area. It will be easier for you. And safer.
Under the first bridge are boulders. Be careful.
Big snags by the water pump.
Past the pump is a wing dam which goes from the south bank out about 60-70 feet.
It's rocky there also.

Don't go too far past J street.
It gets hard to get back up

Be safe.

I'm going to go day after tomorrow on my first day off. Can i anchor up there? I've got a decent drift anchor setup so I face down stream. Wouldn't that be the way to use a k15 with sardine?

I went there a few hours ago to scout. Not enough current for an anchor.
Best bet is to float down throwing spinners to J st bridge.
Then tie on a kfish or a flatfish wrapped and just get that thing as close to bottom as you can.
Then troll upstream slow. There is a deep hole right up from j street up till the old bridge pilings. Then it shallows an the deeper spot is along the rocks on the south bank till the walkbridge.
When the fish are there they can be caught in any of this area.
Also try spinners trolling back.
Need a swivel with a leader to avoid line twist. Get that spinner near the bottom. Use a 3 way with an ounce or less. Or an egg weight above the swivel.
Good luck.

Have fun and let us know how you do. I live closed by Howe Ave launch and fished on shore by the pump house before, seeing a lot of yak launching from there both for fishing and recreation, being a rookie, I haven't launch my yak on the AR by myself yet. I might give it a try next Friday on my day off. Tomorrow morning I will be paddling the Cosumnes River Preserve.

I'm going to launch at Howe tomorrow.  I'll report back if there is anything going on.  I wanted to get further down the river, but I don't think my mirage drive will work beyond j street.

You can go down farther, just right arter the wing damn right at J st on the south bank you have a good deep channel that runs downstream..it's doable, just be careful.

And if they lower flows tonite then no you can't.
They are currently at 1400... If they go lower don't attempt it.

Wish I could go with and scout ahead for you, gotta work.

what time are you guys launching? i fished off the bank by Cal Expo today with no luck. I did have a line in the water for stripers while I casted for salmon and caught a few undersized so it wasn't a complete bust. But I did want to go up river tomorrow and try my luck by howe or watt. I wanna be on the water by 630-7am and fish till about 10-11.

What's up Matt! I didn't see the fire while I was fishing. I must of have left just before it started. I saw all the smoke when I came back to the Costco on Exposition, it was really smokey and ash everywhere. At this rate the whole AR bank is gonna be cleared by the end of summer. Its crazy!

Hope it all burns below Watt...... Needs to clear out all the homeless hangouts... It's so bad this year, way worse than last year.... Not sure why.  Maybe the hot weather?

Another thing for all newbs to keep in mind, your car or truck has a good chance of getting broken into unless there is a big group get together. During the big get togethers cars in parking lot are always left alone. Lotta thieves in the parkway.

Don't leave ANYTHING of any value in sight.  Happens every year. Reason I walk my kayak to the river on wheels rather than risk a break in.
