If fishing new waters what is your go to lure if not sure fish are there and/or not sure what they are feeding on?

What brought this up is I have been fishing for trout in Sac River last month, listened to locals/read a lot, tried different things but not having much luck (one trout, a few sucker fish). Two days ago went to my stand-by lure - blue/silver kastmaster and have caught one or two trout in 30 - 60 minutes fishing each day, same area I have been fishing for a month.

Fish I have caught on blue/silver kastmaster

Striper
Bluefish
Needlefish
White perch
Yellow perch
Pickeral
Catfish
LG Bass
SM Bass
Bluegill
Trout

Kastmaster is a freakin' BOSS of a lure.  Extremely versatile and catches all manner of fish.  I'd take a silver 1/4 ounce Kastmaster anywhere and fish it with confidence.  Cast and steady retrieve, jigging retrieve, vertical jigging.  Not to mention it casts a mile.

My only beef with Kastmasters is the stock hooks suck.  I always change them out with slightly larger hooks.

I like to stick an eye on my Kastmaster as well as change out the treble to a single hook to keep from loosing so many when still jigging.

However, a white grub is as good or better.  Big fish=big grub.  Little fish=little grub.  From ocean to streams I can step over, the white grub works.

I really like little clios an addition to kastmasters.  Gold and red for stained / moving water silver blue for clear still water.

Caught trout, steelhead, bass, and squaw fish on clios.

Yeah, Kastmasters have make the cut for my travelling tacklebox and have caught fish everywhere.  Although right next to it in the box is a krocodile!  Go to size is a 1 ounce model.  Bigger than that starts to feel too big for a Kastmaster (don't ask me why!) and I switch to a Krocodile.

I always have a soft spot for blue fox. Have caught all species of salmon, a variety of rock fish, rainbows, cutties, pan fish, pike, walleye,  and more on them.

All-around need to catch fish to survive or eat bugs - Little Cleo

Must have for trout trips - Kastmaster

Salt water can't do without - Hopkins Lure (especially East Coast)

With all that, I still catch most of my fish on Shad Raps. Money.
