I had a break in on my car a few years ago, and they opened my garage n took the opener. I stayed in my garage for three days and nights with both trucks parked around the block, with enough weapons to free Hamas. I told the cops I would kill any man, woman, or child crossing the threshold. They instructed me to wound so they could prosecute, I said I will try, but the barrel climbs on three shot bursts! One trip to the local tweaker house with a stern warning to leave my house alone, and no problems on my street since. In 95240, I am 911.

I installed 4 wireless videocams made by Defender. 2 at the front door, 1 at the side gate and 1 at the rear sliding door. Video surveilance is one of many things you can do to make your house less desirable to criminals. The main advantage that I see is the intercom function and alert when somebody comes up the walkway. So I can see who is at the door and tell them to go away without having to open the door. If you reinforce your front door, you will have time to get to your safe room and call the cops in a home invasion scenario. I also have a home alarm system (Bay Alarm), motion detector outdoor lighting, reinforced exterior doors, dog (Molly) :smt005, and my hand held security system. My neighborhood has had 6 burglaries in the last 6 months of 2013 and we started a neighborhood watch program. A lot of my neighbors installed layered security systems and recently no more burglaries.

Pretty sure, the blood all over my concrete most of the year from dead animals is a good deterrent. ...........

Look into an NVR vs DVR (Network Video Recorder) The DVR saves locally to a drive or flash drive the NVR is net based and also not required to be in the same place or connected to the cameras. The NVR will capture the images and save to a designated drive or net storage (cloud)
Video quality will improve as an NVR can capture High Resolution imagery using Mega Pixel cameras.. More expensive yes but it has been my experience that a standard camera recording to a DVR can make it challenging to see detailed facial features which are crucial to an investigation after a break-in.
I started out managing a network which used over 25 DVR's networked and used a desktop for on site access and laptop for off site access. When NVR's started to work into the market I jumped on them as quick as I could. The NVR is a good solution and probably better seeing as the tech for DVR's is probably on its way out. I've been out of the business for almost a year so things may have changed but I hope this gives you some food for thought.

Cheers!

Buy a crate of these http://www.amazon.com/Trademark-Global-72-0850-Super-Alarm/dp/B001D27YC6 and trap your whole yard like you were Vietcong. That doesn't work, use caltrops. That doesn't work,, claymores...
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Bumping a year old topic because reasons.

Any new experiences?  Anyone have any reports on effectiveness?

I'm looking for an outdoor system to monitor my alley, ideally non-obvious, weatherproof, motion/sound detection with alerts to my smartphone, cloud storage of images/video, and sufficient resolution to be able to identify people from 50-100 feet away.  I'd like to keep it under $1,000.

I'm specifically looking for a system like this.  I don't want to shoot anyone, shock anyone, imprison anyone or get a big guard dog.  This is for a dead end alley shared with 5 other homes.

Thanks.

A police friend of mine recently shared a story involving a lady who claimed that her neighbor kept coming on her property.  They (police) recommended a security system since there was no proof other than her word.  The lady had a Costco system installed.  The neighbor ventured on her property again and she called the cops again.  My friend was reluctant since most systems tend to show very fuzzy images, etc.  However, he viewed the video and was able to clearly identify the neighbor.

So, long story short=> Costco brand systems are actually pretty good.

What are you doing to make you camper less accessible? Do you have a lock on the trailer, lock on the gas bottle, cable lock through your wheels.  We had a 15 KW generator stolen at work, and I wish we had done that.

Do what I do! Shoot your bow in the front yard, often. Carry multiple firearms to your vehicle, often. Gut, skin, and pluck dead animals in your driveway, often. And wrap crime scene tape around your vehicle and trees, once. Just once is all ya need, but AFTER, and this is key, after you have accumulated lots of critter blood on pavement and concrete. For added effect, have your kids outline you in chalk. Dont mow your grass. #nobodyfuckswithyou #mormonfreesince03 #neighborsstoptalkintoo

I can see how that would work.  However, in my neighborhood we have a guy who like to talk long and loud about how many guns he has (and his willingness to shoot would be intruders).  To date his is the only house on our block that has been burglarized, and the only thing stolen was his gun collection. I realize that there could be little connection between the burglary and the loudmouth, but it is an interesting question.  What do you guys think: does bragging about your gun collection increase your risk of burglary?

I like to keep quiet about my firearms, and instead play fetch with my 110 lb (and still growing) dog in the front yard.

I would not mention anything about guns. Same reason why cops dont want anyone to know they are cops.   Someone wants and needs guns they will stalk you and break in while your gone.

Just get trained in safety, room clearing and tactics.  There is plenty of free training.  Some you get paid to do it. Military- Infantry, and PD's. Leave hidden weapons around the house:smt003

It would be worth teaching my gangly Anatolian to retrieve birds (he doesn't intuitively fetch) if for nothing else than comedy.
