ICAST Goodies for Kayak Anglers

Innovation was the theme at ICAST 2006, the fishing industry’s trade show. And while there weren’t many places to kayak fish at the show site in parched Las Vegas, there were plenty of ground-breaking products on display for the paddle-powered angler.

Light, Strong, and Built for ‘Sit-Down’ Fishing: Lamiglas Kayak Series Rods
Lamiglas has a treat for kayak anglers: a new series of custom-quality saltwater rods specialized for our ‘sit-down’ fishing style. There are seven models, 3 casting and 4 spinning, rated to handle lines from 6-lbs. all the way up to 40. All measure 7-ft. 6-in., long enough to reach around the bow or get the line out of the way of a troller’s paddle stroke.

The Kayak Series rods are remarkably lightweight and sensitive, yet built to survive punishing conditions. Lamiglas National Sales Manager John Posey said the rods’ toughness comes from the Tri-Flex construction process, an exclusive graphite-fiberglass-graphite ‘sandwich’ that produces a soft, fast-action tip and plenty of backbone for lifting fish. “You can high-stick the rod without breaking the tip,” said Posey, a good thing since it’s nearly unavoidable when bringing a fish ‘yak-side.

Unique kayak friendly features include rod butts sized for a seated fight and integrated leash points for tying down a stick that’s too good to go overboard. www.lamiglas.com
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

For trolling, I'd tend to agree with you John. For rockfish, I think 7'6" should be fine.

But what I really like is the pictured kayaker with about $800 invested in a single rod/reel combo. Oh yeah, like I'm taking that out in a yak...   Give me something I can lose and not cry about for a month. Or year for that matter.

Here's another PDF promo flyer for the rods.

There's one quote here that says ... "hooked fish are easily followed around either end of the Kayaks  up to 14-feet in length, without awkward motions".  14-feet???  What about those of  us with longer boats?  Luckily I have longer arms and can make up the difference.

These rods look pretty nice and well thought-out.  Lamiglas's Tri-Flex technology creates some great rod blanks... very light weight for the amount of power they store and durable.  I've built a few of them and like them alot.

As for length... everyone has their preference.  I generally don't see the need to go longer than 7 feet for anything except for trolling or mooching and my boat is 14'3".

More info on these rods.  MSRP is ~$200 each.  No one carries them yet in the Bay Area.  No longer rods planned at the moment.

Yup, I've been exchanging a few emails with them.  I too would like to see a slightly longer rod for salmon fishing with.

If they make the blanks available, I can exend them no problem... though extending them will give them a touch faster action.

John, what would your ideal specs be for a rod of this type?  Total length.  Rear butt length.  Forward butt length.  Action.  Power.  etc.

Anyone else have a wish list for kayak fishing specific rods?

Erik, how do you extend them?  Hide the extension in the butt I presume.

Can extend a rod blank with a piece of aluminum tubing or scrap section of blank sized to couple with the butt.

Preferred is to have the extension be the female portion of the coupling, but can be done the other way too.  Then build the grips over the extension.

This will make the blank faster because the extension will not really have any flex to it, so the action of the rod moves foward a bit.

us manly men of 5'9" stature on 15' boats need the 8'3" reach to get around the bow when the rod is bent a bit.
