Took my young buddy Jesse out diving yesterday!

Great guy and really needed some water therapy, and I really wanted to get him on a solid fish.

Found a NICE lingcod for him down in a crack at 36 feet.

Had him drop down while I lit it up with the dive light...unfortunately he missed it! Doh!  :smt044

All good, he was super stoked to see the big dinosaur and I know he will get it next time!

Took him to another area and he shot enough nice rockfish for his family.

While he was blasting away at schooling blues I explored the edges of the pinnacle and the boulder field down below at 58 feet. Found a monster olive...and missed it! Doh!  :smt005

Jesse was pretty seasick by then and had to be back at work by noon so he headed in and I decided to hit up one more spot to see if I could get a Hail Mary ling to help make sure Jesse's family had enough fish.

This area has some killer structure and varied depth and I was lucky enough to find a 30+ inch Ling, a 28 inch Ling and an 18 inch cabezon in about half an hour.  :smt004

Anyway, it was a fun little session and proud of Jesse for giving it his best shot!!

Ran into Jeremy out there as well, great seeing you dude!

Here's a mini vid and a few pics.

Jim

Those are some great fish. Thanks for sharing the video.

I can't stay down that long and definitely can't dive that deep yet, but can't wait until I can.  All the lings I have seen this past week were to small.  Your videos give me hope that I will someday be able to pick and choose my fish.

Amazing depth of dives in my opinion.  BTW, you play with your food too much!  Ha!

Nice work, Jim.   :smt001

I'm finding a need to diversify my camera work with new angles and perspectives.  Have you played with having a camera on a gun yet?  Could be pretty rad.

The bigger ling I shot probably only in 20-25 feet of water, and the smaller one was in about 10-15 and I spotted him while I was laying on the surface...

Plenty of good fish in shallow if you hunt in the right areas...just keep putting in your time in the depth that you feel comfortable at and you will find good fish.

Look at this monster Ling fuzz shot in less than 10 feet of water:

Ideally, I  try and start off shallow to warm up, then move out deeper, then finish in shallow again once getting tired and/or running out of time...

you play with your food too much!  Ha!

LMAO!! I know...bad habit....I'm always in awe of how cool these fish are and find myself just enjoying watching them.  :smt007

Have you played with having a camera on a gun yet?  Could be pretty rad.

I don't have a mount set up on the gun, but yeah, I've been thinking about it...especially cuz sometimes the view of a fish way back in a crack gets blocked by the rock when the camera is on my head...

A guy I know makes these cool handheld pistol grips that I think I wanna do some experimenting with:

Looks like you need a new pair of gloves. :smt003

:smt005 Yep. These ones are pretty trashed.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas!

Jim

How long does it take you from your home door step to pull into SWS?

LOL! Depends on traffic...In AM when I usally hed down the roads are empty and if I don;t stop to pick up bloodbath in Marina I can be at the beach in about 30 minutes...

About 45 minutes to come home with some traffic.  :smt001

Thanks buddee!!

Also...its' hard to see in the vid, but right before I shoot the first Ling I pause and hold for what seemed like an eternity...reason for that was the surge came on pretty strong right then and actually moved me a little bit to my right (can see little particles in lightbeam moving to my right as well), and I had to really focus to stay still and keep my gun trained on the Ling...waited until surge passed, made sure shot was still lined up, and then pulled the trigger.
