just curious, since I've never caught one here. caught starry flounder locally, but never a sand sole.

they were all caught on whole frozen squid on a 3 way,  trying for the butt action for no love but caught them instead.  I was in 55 fow right at the point south of SCH leading into Capitola if that helps any.....

Pacific halibut have no minimum or maximum length to take, but only 1 per limit.  Also the season is May till October 31st and for 2014 its closed in August.

There are some flatfish that are managed under the federal groundfish laws and have depth restrictions as well as bag restrictions, but most of the time your good to keep most flatfish.

Dude, you absolutely did the right thing in releasing them.  It bugs the hell out of me when people keep fish that they can't identify.  Don't worry, now you know what they are and will be ready to bonk them the next time you see those "free" dorsal fins rays  :smt003.

If you have a picture of the other side I can tell if its a  petrale sole. The white side has v shaped lines to the  center
