Hi All,

My name is Aaron and I am new to kayak fishing.  I currently do not have a kayak but hope to get one in the near future.  I am a Wood Shop and Metal Shop teacher and now that school is out I have some time on my hands.  I was pondering ideas about how to make some extra $$$ to fund a Kayak and came up with these fishing related items.

I have made a few shad Jig heads with a friend’s mold. If there is interest, I could buy my own mold(s) and start producing them in a variety of sizes and colors, but which ones?  I have made 1.5 and 2 oz heads but see that some use up to 4 oz. heads.   Also what are the popular colors  Red, chartreuse, white or ????

The second idea I have is to make some Gaffs, I can make them in a variety of materials and styles, I use 1/4” stainless steel rod for the hook and, on this one, Maple for the shaft.  I could use a variety of woods and handle wrap colors.  This one turned out nice but the handle is a little big, imo.  In the future I would make them a bit thinner in diameter so that they are easier to grasp and will fit into a rod holder, but I thought the knob at the end would help with grip and double as a club.

Let me know if this is something I should get myself more involved with or not,
Thanks,
Aaron

Aaron,

   Welcome to the group!

You'll probably find about 1/2 dozen, or more, long time members of the group making & selling jig heads on here.  Not to deter you ... just know that there are a number of other guys doing it here too.

Nice looking jigs & gaffs though!

Bill

Thanks for the reply Bill,

I figured I was not the first to have this idea, but figured I would put it out there.  May be I ll just make a few and place them up for sale.
Thanks again,
Aaron
