I've got to start rigging my new beast, and the first two things on my list are tramps and a FF/GPS combo. Anyone got any opinions on the best quality/best deals/best ideas? I've seen these tramp/splash guard combos on EBay for like $190, which is a lot easier to stomach that $300+ for the Hobie ones. Does anyone know if there is a major difference in quality/function? I would like them strong for salmon fishing! Any input would be greatly appreciated.  :smt003

I looked hard & long at the eBay sets.  I also made a custom set.  In the end, I dished out the money & bought the Hobie ones (used).  Been VERY happy with the Hobie ones.  Heard most people don't like/use the eBay splash guards.  I believe the eBay tramps are a little narrower as well which some like because you can still paddle between the tramp & the hull if needed.  I believe GB2 uses the eBay one with his dog.  The Hobie ones are mesh so water flows thru.  My opinion on them!

If you have any questions on the Lowrance line of FF/GPS products, don't hesitate to drop me a PM.

You can't paddle with Hobie tramps so launching, landing, traversing kelp they really suck.

I made 1 that came out OK but ive turned it into a banner, the second one became a cover for my tablesaw.  I have leftover material enough to make 2 more but I'm not about to try again.  Just buy a pai r.  Worth the $ when compared to building some.

I have the ebay tramps and really like them. I usually run with just one on the left side. They also include the bow spray skirt (I have never used them). If you can find someone to split a set that would be my choice. I only really use two when I take my kids out. I also made a haka bench that is great for crabbing (again I run just the one)

+'s
-Price (WAY cheaper)
-They are narrower so you can slide them "out" and have room to paddle
-The are solid and keep my kids dryer
-Customer service (see below)
-Metal fasteners (I have seen a few of the Hobie plastic buckles break)
-I weight 200lb (prob 225lb with all my gear) and they are way strong enough

-'s
-Not real Hobie if you care.
-Not mesh so if you want to have water splash on the top it won't (although I seem to get plenty of water on there when sailing (I also keep my fish in the tank well
-I had a buckle break (there are 4 per tramp) but the vendor sent a replacement free of charge no questions asked
-I have black they can get a little hot but a splash of water cools them off. IMHO the other colors are pretty obnoxious

Hey Tony, I just got an AI on Monday too.  Let me know if you want to split a tramp set.  I'm also looking at hakas too since folks seem to like the functionality

I had a tramp set made out of the same material as the hobies, ended up being about half the cost.  I hardly ever use them anymore, and i have easily enough material for another set.

If you want the material let me know.  we can work out a price

What's the advantage of using hakas over tramps?

Is it more weight bearing and load stability?

I use both. The haka is more like a work bench (great for crabbing) but they are a bit heavy. Tramps are easy, light weight and if needed can be removed OTW
