Got any good links for rescuing a buddy? I had no idea How to help my buddy when he flipped out a couple weeks ago other than tow him to shore

now that you bring that up,

There was a system at the Dallas HOW Convention that involved using a device that was something that a person could use as a foothold… it deploys easily and seemed very effective…

does anyone know WTH I'm talking about?

it would be great for HOW events…

I can find out with a little research, but Damn I'm busy…  :busy

Probably the most helpful thing to learn is how to stabilize your buddies kayak while he climbs back on.  Many people "lose it" once they get belly on and then end up tipping over again as they try to right themselves.

I've seen Ken? from Sunrise Kayaks do some amazing things getting vets back into kayaks,  should ask him to come on down and put on show if we do have a another seminar at Del Val..

he has the concession there and we could have HOW gig too...

My advice is to take a course from a certified instructor.  Watch all the Youtube videos you want, but none of that watching will be anywhere near as good as detailed instructions from a seasoned instructor.  The classes at Monterey Bay Kayaks are geared towards kayak fishing and have much more to offer than just self rescue.  They teach you how to enter and exit the surf zone safely.  How to brace and how to ride in on the waves. How to assist someone in re-boarding their kayak.  What the signs of hypothermia are. And the three most common ways to re-enter a sit on top kayak.  I've taken the course four times now, and would gladly take it again and again and again just for additional practice and instruction.

I guess if your fishing the ocean then the class should be in the ocean. But after the fresh water trials. I have an out back and now wonder if I can flip it back over if I do turn it upside down. These out backs are wide and heavy. I'm light and old. I got old by being safe. Guess I will find out before Albion.

This...

Invest in an intro course to kayaking.

If you want to use a sit-on-top kayak for coastal trips, this class is a great investment towards making your adventures safe and enjoyable This class combines the Intro to Kayaks and Surf Zone for a comprehesive and intensive fun day. Includes wetsuit, sit-on-top single kayak and all gear. Instructors are ACA trained. A minimum 2 people are required for the class, or available by private instruction.

Offered every Sunday 9:30 to 5:00

You will also be able to demo their yaks in the process. I believe they offer an NCKA discount as well.

I strongly recommend a course of this type. Always remember safety first. You want to feel safe and comfortable in the water before you start fishing from a yak.

I was teaching my 8 and 10 year old boys self rescue, paddling techniques and how to jump off a yak in a seated position without tipping on Saturday in the backyard.  :smt001
