I've seen them on the beach on the lost coast. They hang in driftwood near the mouths of creeks and rivers.

I've seen quite a few in the water in the eastern Sierra valleys. All over roads there too. Was hiking the central coast 20 years ago and must have seen 20 during my short 10 mile back pack trip. Was backpacking down in the southern desert near Anza Borrego and again saw at least  a dozen over the course of 20 miles or so. If I saw this many in so many places, there must have been plenty more I did not see. I had just finished putting my tent and all back on and in my pack one day. I went to the spring to fill my water bottle, and when I returned 5 mins later or less there was one huge one laying right where I had just packed everything up. They are everywhere and not so rare in my opinion. They are all over the Yuba Gold fields too if you want to find some. The only place I figure I  would find one and don't is at my house. My friend 5 miles a way has already killed about ten this year on his 10 acres. I have a customer in the hills above Lincoln that killed 40 in one wood pile about 5-6 years ago. I saw the pictures. FN crazy. Everyone I know in the the area between Lincoln and auburn kills plenty every year. Yep, pretty rare!

We almost took a swim with this guy. Had to wait until it got out of the water before we could proceed up river fishing.

I've seen 6-8 rattlers in my years of hunting, fishing, and hiking California and the largest by far was on the Sacramento river hunting dove.  We pulled our boat onto a gravel bar where there was a fallen tree about ten feet from the rivers edge.  I got out of the boat first and heard a rattle and thrashing in the root ball of the fallen tree.  I had my dad hand me my shotgun and I quickly removed it's head with a well place shot.  It was 5' long, about as big around as my forearm and had 13 buttons.  I know they probably get bigger than that in California but I have yet to see one larger.

5' is 4" short of the largest recorded size! They don't get much bigger unless your down south almost in az for C Atrox.

The problem with a record rattler is that most encounters are gonna be by hikers, hunters, fisherman and just anyone outdoors. Apparently the people who want to find them can't and the ones who don't do. I'm sure most anyone that's just outdoors comes across a huge 4'+ snake is gonna go the other way not stop and measure. I come across more rattlers than any other snake.

Used to catch rattlers all the time at Folsom Lake.
Pretty much roll over any dead log or big rock and you'll find one.
Used 2 ski poles. One had a hook at the end the other a noose.
Hook the log and roll it, noose the snake. Easy peasy.
