When you cook/meld lead in a cast iron pot, is it pretty much useless afterwards? Or can you still wash it really good and be able to use it for cooking?

I would not eat out of it even after cleaning.  Lead has some nasty neurological effects.

The heat retention is no joke!  When I bake bread in mine, I have to constanly remind myself that both the pot and lid remain hot long after being removed from the oven.

Reason I asked is because I always see cast iron cookwares at the local flea market really cheap. I picked one up for $5 which I use to melt lead. So I guess it may not be safe to buy them used for cooking purposes as you may not know what was cooked in it by the previous owner.

I have a lot of cast iron.  Makes for the best gumbo ever.  You'll never have tastier biscuits. Ahi tuna can not be cooked any other way.  Cinnamon rolls are awesome!  Chili too.  It's so much more healthy for you too compared to aluminum or Teflon.   Lasts for generations.

I've melted lead I collected at a shooting range, outdoors on a cheap propane stove.  The lead was melted in a "Lead melting pot .  Designed and sold for that purpose.

Yeah, I bought mine for the sole purpose of melting/skimming large amount of dirty lead. I have the melting pot as well for the actual pouring.

Cooking-wise, I have a few cast iron cookwares that came with a stove/burner purchase but too heavy to lug around. Maybe One day, I'll cook something in it  :smt003

My Dutchies were full of peach cobbler for the second year st GS8.  Love the cast iron.  Hold the soap!  Lodge makes a chain mail scrubber that is the bomb for cleaning all cast iron.  Get one you will love it!

As much as I like to cook, I don't own a dutch oven.  I been wanting one for a long time, especially now after watching that great video posted by SeaWeed.

Question -- Is it better to the get the dutch oven with or without the little feet?  Which is more versatile?

Two of mine have feet, I use them on the gas burners at home by rotating them to a point where they fit on the rack just right so no issue there.  They go into the oven just fine as well, same method.  It gives you a  little flexability having the legs IMHO.  But you also need a lid lifter when cooking with the coals on top.

Herb, dedicate the lead pot for lead only.

I've been using cast iron for as long as I can remember. Every weekend we still use ours to make biscuits and gravy  :smt007
