The name is a regional thing.  I grew up in the South East and we refer to them as shellcrackers.  Redears and green sunfish are also names Ive heard them called.  Of course we normally just lumped them into a "general" category when fishing for them and called them all bream!

Red ears and bluegill are different fish. Same as green sunfish. Most people don't look close enough to see the difference though.

I Had a really good time. The weather was super nice. Thanks to everyone who showed up and helped out. Ringking's 11yr old son was super cool. He has a pretty comprehensive understanding of freshwater fishing and he manned the big pan like a champ. We served up 160 tacos yesterday. The people were hungry. I managed to get out  for a short paddle between breakfast and lunch. The lake was peaceful and scenic.....just the way i like it.  I also got an extensive education in Texas style hog-hunting from the veteran from texas. I can't say that i have ever met a man more passionate about hunting than him.

I think i posted my report on the wrong thread. :smt003 Here is my re-do:   I had a good time.
I was super impressed by ringking's 11yr old son. Thoroughly schooled in freshwater fishing, smart, well spoken, hardworking and kind. Who the hell raises kids like that anymore? Certainly not my parents. And the kid can cook too !!! Well done Ringking. You must be very proud. I didn't fish but got out for a paddle between meals. I love Hennessy. It is long, smooth and scenic like a nice bottle of cognac. I really enjoyed hanging out with the veteran from Texas. I have never met a man more passionate about hunting. He truly lives for the hunt. He gave me an education in wild boar hunting in Texas. It is very different than california boar hunting. Thanks to all the volunteers who showed up and helped out.

Thanks to all the vets and volunteers. Another successful HOW event. My first time on LH and was pleasantly surprised. Molly and I trolled around the whole lake and caught a DFG trout which was successfully released.  Helped Jack on the taco assembly line. Good times for sure.

Yup, they're bluegill. Bluegill have a solid black opercular flap and long, pointed pectoral fins. Sunfish have stubbier, rounded pectoral fins and their opercular flaps have a colored margin that varies by the species(redear have red margins, green have white margins, etc.). Either way, those are PIGS !!! :smt003

We hope this is the first of many events we have with Pathways.  I talked with the therapist and the intern and both said what How offers is the type of activity that allows the vets to decompress.  When I arrived, Rider, James, had already taken three vets and was down at the east end of the lake.  I went down to check on them, and Joe had nailed a 18 inch rainbow.  He caught the trout on a drop shot.  Go figure.  So in the last month, I have seen one of our NCKA members, Surferdude, catch a 8 lb rainbow trout on a crank bait, and now a vet catches a trout on a drop shot.  I guess it's good to have those techniques in your arsenal.  Thanks to Jack for the fantastic breakfast and lunch, and to the other volunteers.  Thanks to Don for the persistence and patience to make this happen.  Rob, Don and I finally left as dusk.  It was a satisfying day.
