We had a long day otw.  Olive, verm, blues, nice lings at 30" & some Monterey salmon. Lots of undersized lings.  Dolphins & a few great full-breech humpbacks early in the am (5:30) on the way out from Moss.

Damn Strait! :smt002  Wandered as far as Stillwater from Moss.  Takes a toll on the body bouncing across the bay at 20+ knots with times at 25+ knots.  Lots of stick boats out there & the bait boats were working some areas pretty hard it looked.

Did they ask permission or can they do that as they please? Just wondering. I know a lot of people don't mind the fish heads, but some want them for making soups, stew, etc.

The DFG can take salmon heads of hatchery fish for their study.

From page 34 of the 2014 Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations:

Quote
Section 8226. Relinquishment of salmon head for recovery of coded-wire tag.
(a) Notwithstanding any measurement requirements under this code, and to implement the
Department’s salmon tagging program, any person in possession of a salmon with a missing
adipose fin, the small, fleshy fin on the back of the fish between the back fin and the tail, upon
request by an authorized agent or employee of the Department, shall immediately relinquish
the head of the salmon to the state, at no charge, for recovery of any coded-wire tag. The head
may be removed by the fish owner or, if removed by the official Department representative, the
head shall be removed in a manner to minimize loss of salmon flesh and the salmon shall immediately
be returned to the rightful owner.

I was out Sat on the 'Sur Randy' -off moss- south side of the trench...we moved a lot but that was the basic area....fwiw we had a huge show of whales all day and early in the day we spotted a group feeding and followed --- large group of humpbacks who put us on a bait ball and put me on my 15lber...at the time they were very near, and doing straight up surface lunges mouths open wide ,on bait...I saw so many whales and all types of tail/body/fin back angles...by far the best, most exciting , non orca, whale watching ever---oops i mean salmon fishing trip  :smt003  dont want to get charged the 40 for whale watching also  :smt001 :smt001 :smt001

also the dfg biologist chick(nice looking too) who took the salmon head was great about explaining what they use it for-chip in the head tells-where released-what group and location it was egg raised from-size and age, plus more....well worth giving up a fish head imo....out of the 8 salmon I've brought home this season SO FAR!!!  :smt002 :smt002 r-only two had heads removed at the dock...one medium and one large fish

hijack over...

Went out of monterey on Sunday. Saw Trianglelaguna and company. It was fun at the yellow can but swells just wouldn't cooperate. On the troll home, i did manage a 30 inch ling that was good size. Great weather all in all... and good to always see new faces. --Keith
