Don't try and use it as your carry on and make sure it's not banded/loaded before packing it up!  :smt044

Tell Mike to pack his stuff in a case or tube and at check-in declare it as fishing equipment.
Do NOT mention gun or speargun. Tell him to leave the powerheads at home if he intends to bring them!
He will probably use a 110+ gun which is an oversize luggage.  Usually airlines have a special rate on fishing rods/equipment, otherwise if Mike calls his oversized luggage something other than "fishing equipment" he would be better off buying a Mako gun in the Mako La Paz outlet and sell it when he returns. Now if he flies into Loreto first, he may want to look-up the Mex spearfishing club/organization--- I am sure that a fellow spearo would help him our.
A better forum for this inquiry is probably spearboard.
BTW Mike should bring a handful of spare shafts especially if he targets pargo and grouper.
Good luck to Mike retrieving his password ;)
Tell Mike to take pics ;)

I've been taking mine down for the past couple years. I took apart my Rob Allen and place it diagonally in my big suitcase. No problema.......When they check it in front of you on the way back to the states you just tell them what it is. On the Rob Allen there are a couple of screws that allow you to take the barrel off of the pistol grip. I also remove the spear and bands. Fits in the suitcase with plenty of room to spare.

I'll do the same thing in July when I head back down again.

wait wut?  Toss it into a sportube or a ski bag.  Tell em its fishing equipment and normally its no charge.  Keep it less then 81" and you're good to go.

Alaska Air
http://www.alaskaair.com/content/travel-info/policies/baggage-sporting-equipment.aspx
"Fishing
One piece of fishing equipment is defined as two rods, two reels, and one tackle box. Fishing equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but no more than 115 linear inches (length + height + width), without incurring an oversize fee."

Virgin America is the same.

Look up your airline print out the baggage exemptions for sporting goods and you're good to go.
