Yes a charger is not the same as a maintainer. He was saying that a charger that can do both is better to have since it will do double duty.

Mine both do both functions.

But if it is very weak charger it might not do as well charging a larger battery.

A 6 amp charger for a 7-8amp battery seems like a bit to much

Multiple Charging Modes
Microprocessor-controlled to automatically adjust amperage rate. In 6-amp Fast Charge mode, the charger monitors battery condition and adjusts charge rate downward to prevent battery damage for car, small truck, motorcycle, and lawn tractor lead-acid and AGM battery types. 4-amp Medium Charge is a self-adjusting charge rate that's ideal for everyday charging needs and for keeping your battery in peak condition. 2-amp Slow Charge is a trickle setting for charging and maintaining small batteries, such as those for motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and lawn tractors.

The op was asking about a fish finder battery not a marine battery.

Note that most typically use SLA type batteries that are NOT "car, small truck, motorcycle, and lawn tractor  lead-acid and AGM battery types".  The above is not applicable.

Just get a 1.5 amp smart charger and a 7ah battery and call it good. Done, end of debate.

Just bring over those batteries we talked about and I'll trade you for a spare charger I have.

Here's the spec on my Batter Tender...  It seems to be a charger as well.  I've used it well over 10+ years on batteries.

Temperature compensated to ensure optimum charge voltage according to ambient temperature.
Automatically switches from full charge to float charging mode.
Battery Tender® at 1.25 amps will charge as fast or faster than any 3 amp charger available.
Complete 4-step charging program (Initialization, Bulk Charge, Absorption Mode, Float Mode).
