Actually Henry was paddling forward with all his might but during the last moments he wasn't going anywhere but back. The wave sucked him in pretty good.
It was not a good day for me, him Bob and Gary. We all got slammed either during the launches or landings. I got the worst during the landing but was glad to make it out okay.

That picture would be mounted and put on the Wall of Fame.  (What not to do!)  Glad that your  okay Henry.

In looking at the first picture, if you back paddled, you might had made it.

JTF -- great action photo!

Actually it looks like in the first picture that he is dragging his paddle.  I think if he had forward paddled (HARD!), he might have made it.  Instead, we was caught right in the middle of the wave cresting ... NOT GOOD!

Sorry to disappoint but all I lost was a little fishing time.  After I got eaten up by waves at Linda Mar on opening day in July I learned real quick what not to do.

Since I've fished the Hollow the last 4 weeks, Sunday was the worst I've seen it.  Last week on Labor Day the waves didn't even break because the swells were moving south and the northern rocks completely blocked them.  We paddled into Bean Hollow pond.  One week later and it turns into Maverick's south...go figure.

This is my first year kayak fishing and I've been spoiled by the relatively uneventful launches and exits.  Last Sunday was a slap in the face reminder that the Hollow was not to be taken for granted.  If a veteran like Freddie "Savage" got his butt kicked there in the past then you have my attention.  I only hope I can be a fraction of the fisherman and kayaker he is.

Wow, I feel for Henry, we picked him out of the surf on his first attempted launch and now he's a poster boy for doing a rolling landing.  Henry, I hope the fish you caught tasted good because you really earned it.  ChuckE I sense another collection of pics that will rival the big fish pics.  JTF, you do the captions and we'll all be rolling.  LOL

Bob's OK, he rides motorcycles so he has more guts (or he's crazier) than a lot of us.  He's been seeing all the fish we catch so trust me, he'll be back.  He's quite the fresh water fisherman and he paddles in the bay routinely, not to worry about him.  We'll just have to pick better days to launch in the surf...after he gets the sand out of his ears.

I did the Henry landing but in much worse case up at Anchor Bay.

did my diving in nasty water for abalone and stowed everything in the hull of my kayak.

I was paddling in and a 8-9 foot breaker was chasing me. I had high hopes of success (angels singing in the background) but also knew deep inside it was going to be nasty. i could not lie to myself.

I leaned back almost to the point of sitting in my tank well and that thing threw me end over end down the face. All I could think of was who was going to inherit my guinea pig after i pass on..

My wife said it looked funny and that i "almost had it."

as they say "close only counts in horseshoes and atom bombs"

Sure, its always the "you almost had it" that gives people the giggles.

i said,  just laugh, you know you want to!!!!

and yes, it hurt! why do i find it so funny to watch people get whomped by a big wave and find it a deadly serious thing when i am that person facing the wall of water.

another time i was at stillwater cove in carmel and a mini tsunami appeared from nowhere. one second looking for a place to anchor and next second i looked to my right and saw nothing but a wall of water over my head. my friend ron could do nothing as i got rolled in the middle of nowhere with no pinnacles under me. lost dive boots, fin and a speargun that day.

amazing world we live in. i still love the ocean even though it slaps me around a lot.

sometimes between the actual crash landing and the cresting of the wave some folks might reach a level of heavenly nirvana kind of a thin line separating death and life:

Awesome shots JTF.  Good fishing all and much respect to everyone who bit it, shook it off, and then walked away (or limped).

Reading these reports makes me really jealous that I haven't gotten to go out yet.  I think I'm just gonna have to take the plunge and by a boat soon...after paddlefest of course.

Nice fish there. Have to warn you though. The limit on Cabs is one and is included in the 10 rockfish bag limit.

Ohh...  Thanks for the info.  I thought the limit on cabs were 2.

Here are some "mini-tunas" I got a few weeks back off Linda Mar.  Hope there isn't a limit on those, because I got over 30 of them.
