I am assuming you two are talking about Chinook fishing around here? Unless you traveled pretty far looking for pinks?

Yes, I meant Chinook fishing around here. I think there are pinks off the coast of California also.

I don't know much about pinks, but Ihave heard a few stray here from time to time.

When I fish in Alaska we throw the pinks back or use them for halibut bait because they are considered to be a lesser fish.  Compared to silvers or kings they don't taste nearly as good.
"Pedo Viejo" is what Antonio called me.

Me neither. We need Naoaki and ATD to chime in.

Last summer when I made my annual pilgrimage up to Washington I gave it a go a couple times with some NWKA bros. Went out twice for nada.  First one didn't even get hit, second time I had one on for about 10 seconds before it shook the hook.  I SUCK at pink salmon fishing, and will proudly admit it.  They only run every other year, so I will try again in 2015 perhaps.  I hear if you hit the right time place, it is non-stop action.

This isn't really a "new" problem.  There's been talk for some years now about what to do with all the damn pink salmon in the Pacific Northwest.  It'd be a helluva lot easier if there was a solid market demand for them, but unfortunately they rank down near the bottom for tablefare.  It was a few years ago, but last I heard commercial guys were lucky to get 13 cents a pound for pinks.

There used to be a couple decent runs of pinks in CA, including a regular run in the Russian River.  These days you hear of a few fish here and there, but not really enough to constitute a "run".

Perhaps if we humans had not started havesting so many forage fish this would not be a "problem".  This is another great attempt to find a "natural scapegoat" for the long term consequences of 7 billion people demanding fish.

a teaser on forage fish over-harvest.  surprisingly like a lead-up to the Monterrey Bay sardine collapse, but global...
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/02/science/earth/forage-fish-catches-should-be-reduced-report-says.html?_r=0

but otherwise, yeah too many salmon, pink salmon to be exact, so stop hatchery efforts for chinook because they lead to dead birds...  I wonder who paid for this shat?
