Down rigger worth the trouble ?

If you're new to salmon trolling on the ocean I'd advise using more basic gear to start out.

Double DeepSix isn't that hard to paddle around with - I can't wait to drag my train of gear for some miles.

It's more like miles, and miles, and miles, and miles and miles...........

I put in 4 days, 8 plus hours a day, and countless miles at Albion last year for one fish. That one fish hit within 2 minutes of deploying gear on day 4.

Anyone tried an outrigger of this  type? The settings are adjustable and can be put in an upright position when not trolling for less resistance when moving from area to area. Not top of the line for the ocean ,but look a little better than those inflatable ones for lakes. . Run about 160.00 with free shipping

Bulldog- I'm curious what your motivation is for adding outriggers to a regular kayak? Feeling unstable? I personally think they would just get in the way.

An AI with tramps is of course a different animal. They make sense to me in that application.

I guess if you want to stand on your kayak for whatever reason, they would help. The only time I've been tempted to stand was while sight fishing for bass. I don't do that often though...

As for trolling, I'd say try the sinker release and double deep six BEFORE you start poking extra holes in your boat.

There is no way i am gonna stand my fat ass up !!   It is more so for trolling in the ocean. Not to keen on dropping lead weights at the bottom of the ocean all the time.  . Very familiar with downriggers on boats. Just getting some input and ideas for my kayak.

Then go Deep Six.  That is your best way if you don't want a downrigger.  Otherwise, go heavier gear & "trooch" for them.  You're over thinking this situation.  Now get out there & fish!

Wouldn't say i'm overthinking it. Getting some great advise and thoughts from people  that is greatly appreciated. would rather have some knowledge than just guessing it. No such thing as a bad question .... only bad advice!   Skip the outriggers, buy a couple Deep Six planes & go mooch some Salmon!

Was that meant for the other guy? I'm already happy with my DD6 for 0-60 feet deep and 1.5-lb balls for deeper than that. Both methods caught me salmon last year, and I have no interest in adding a downrigger for salmon fishing.

Might be nice to have a DR for trout or koke trolling at some point, but that's a different game entirely.

Was for me. I am more interested in a downrigger.  Not interested. In dropping lead ball at the bottom of the sea floor anymore. 

Downriggers definitely add an extra level of complexity to fishing for salmon in the ocean.  I tried it once last year and ended up going the DD6 route, even on my AI.  I will give the downrigger another shot this year though.

Good Luck BMB. Hope WE post some good pics this year of Salmon.. . Typically if your not on the salmon early in the morning. They tend to run down to 150 ft plus in the Monterey bay. If all else fails, there is always mooching.

Off subject a little but still related. Just sold my two manual downriggers andj ust ordered my cannon electric downrigger for my aluminum boat. Gotta save up for the 2nd.  For those salmon that are just a little farther out than the kayak can take me !! YYYEEEHHHAAAA !
