Rod fix

I just got a "new" old rod from a neighbor, and noticed that the pole easily pulls out of the handle.
Anyone know if this is supposed to happen? And if so is there anything I can do to make it stay in there better short of some sort of epoxy or glue?

Maybe Loc-tite? Two versions: one is more permanent than the other.

I've had a few old rods like that. The early version of a 2pc rod.
For a permanent solution maybe try JB Weld. I think they even have a marine version...rough up the surfaces & then bond 'em.
