Trout for Crab Bait

Question: I have some old freezer-burned rainbow trout in my freezer. Is it legal to use trout for crab bait? (Adam B.)

Answer: Yes, as long as the trout in your freezer were legally taken and of legal size, then you can use it as crab bait. Be sure you do not have more than the legal trout possession limit and that all fish meet legal size requirements.

Salmon works better. You can get salmon bellies for $3.99lb at Ranch 99 Markets. I get the bellies for shark fishing mainly. Buy from the counter as the pre packaged stuff is salmon on top and misc. stinky rock fish underneath. Sharks didn't even touch the rockfish.

I tried Lassen Trout carcasses, the crabs at HMB didn't touch them.  I won't use them again.

I kept my FoodMaxx receipt with me. No joke.

The salmon heads with collars are $2.49/lb and sometime $1.99/lb.  This is my standard cage bait when I don't have carcs in the freezer.  Sort through them for the fresher ones too, and don't get tempted by the other misc heads, like king mackerel.  They just don't work as good.

Related to the subject matter, I discovered a package of 3-year old yellowtail fillets in the freezer. Anyone want to try using them for crab bait? Otherwise, the package is headed for the recycle bin.
