When parking your car on the street, keep in mind that Tweakers will break in for anything, even for the slightest possibility of spare change or a roach in the ash tray. Leave nothing visible in your car & try to park in well-lit, high traffic areas.

My car got broke into a few years ago, they opened the garage door andbtookbthe opener, was wide open when I got up, but nothing missing. Called PD, they came, took a statement, and I told them my plan. At the time, I had a sleeping bag spreadout to air out, so I was going to move all my rigs around the corner, like I was gone, and take three days off work,  which I did, abd camp out under the sleeping bag day and night for the rest of the week and the weekend, with a slough of guns that would give Chuck Norris a boner. Wait for the door to go up, and the moment they cross the threshold,  21 gun goodbye.  Cop told me to just wound so they could prosecute,  I said I would try, but have a habit of hitting high. I waited, they didnt come back. I just unplugged the automatic opener, seldom use it, but I was stoked to have the chance to smoke a tweeker with extreme prejudice.  Next time I guess.

Nothing beats a BIG Dog, .45 and a sign that reads "Hell with the dog, beware of the owner."

Totally agree. A big loud dog. My neighbor leaves his outside to roam at night. As much as I hate the crap in my yard, I appreciate it's community service.

I had a friend lose her stereo when they broke into the car (old VW bug) and pushed it 50ft out of the street light it was under.
Also my then-girlfriend had her super awesome leather jacket stolen from her locked car near Pier 39 in 1995, even though it was hidden behind the seats out of sight. Cops pointed to the high-rise hotel across the street and told us tweekers rent a room just to case anyone parking on the street below.
Worst I got was the one time in the city I didn't lock the truck. Stole $0.75 in change, cheap sunglasses, and my army surplus canvas coveralls. I still miss those coveralls!

Remember that California does not have a Castle defense doctrine.
PC §198.5-

Quote
"Any person using force intended or likely to cause death or great bodily injury within his or her residence shall be presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury to self, family, or a member of the household when that force is used against another person, not a member of the family or household, who unlawfully and forcibly enters or has unlawfully and forcibly entered the residence and the person using the force knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry occurred.

Crash thank you for correcting me....I confused Castle and Stand your Ground clause. Remember that Castle goes away once you leave the bounderies of your home. Besides that is just criminal law, the civil courts would be a nightmare.

California court rulings have affirmed the right to stand your ground. There is no requirement to retreat. Unlike a true "Stand Your Ground" law like in Florida, in California it is a defense to homicide and the burden of proof is on the person claiming the justification, not on the People.

You are absolutely right about civil lawsuits and the nightmare of having to kill someone would likely drag out years, possible in multiple lawsuits.

In response to the title:
Yes, I have been a victim.
Sent him to the hospital to get stitches in his face then off to jail after that.

I would have thought my location would be plenty of deterrent. I'm at least 4 miles from the closest town and even then it's a store, a post office and a restaurant with one intersection.  The next closest town, Placerville, is over 10 miles away.  I'm 7 miles off the freeway.  We are on a dead end street that is marked that way and is about 2 miles long to the end.  All lots are at least 5 acres with about 3/4 of them now built with houses.  The average home value is probably around $500,000 with some up towards the million dollar price range.  I can't imagine a location that would be any safer unless I was on a larger parcel; maybe 40 acres.

My house is 150' off the road and even with all this isolation, there's still asshats who will risk getting themselves killed for a few bucks worth of stuff.  Dogs are zero deterrent when they target the cars in the driveway.  Both neighbors have multiple dogs; cattle dogs, labs, and little lap dogs even.  Unless you park the car where the dog as roam and the dog is out there with the car, it's unlikely the dog is going to alert when someone breaks into a car at your house.
I've never, and I mean NEVER locked a door on a car or the house in the 29 years I've lived at this house.  I've taken trips that were months long and never locked the house.  Why bother when a 12 gauge can be used to open the front door and no one would hear it and if they did, wouldn't think anything of it.  To demonstrate that, I went up to the mail box at the street and fired a round of 12 gauge 00 buck.  I then asked my neighbors if they had heard the shot.  None had, even the guy directly across the street and closest to the mail box.

Jerry I live in an almost identical neighborhood as you only near auburn. I guess I need to start taking the keys out of the vehicles and get keys made for the house.

Jerry,

A little TMI to post on the internet IMO. Not EVERYONE who reads NCKA is a family member if ya get my drift.
Your neighborhood is right off 49. A thieving commuters dream.
I had a guy drive by through my neighborhood last summer when I had the garage open.
He and his passenger looking like they were casing the hood, then he went by my place really slow, looking into the garage. I got in my vehicle and pulled out of the drive to follow him but he flipped a u-turn and went by my house again. I circled the block and came back around. As he was headed toward me I put out my hand as if to ask him a question.
He slowed down then I went all psycho on him.
YOU LOOK INTO MY GARAGE AGAIN M&THER F^$KER I'LL BLOW YOUR F*&%&*KING HEAD OFF! GET OUT OF THAT CAR RIGHT NOW F*&%&KER! RIGHT NOW!!!! I'M GONNA BEAT YOUR @SS! CASE MY NEIGHBORHOOD M*%&T+THER F^*(KER!!???
Then I opened my door to get out and he sped off. I flipped a u-turn to follow just to put the icing on the cake.
Came right home and called the cops to report him.
I'm pretty sure if he thinks a lunatic lives there and would get all bent out of shape just over looking he probably wants nothing to do with him.
you could also purchase a pair of size 22 tennis shoes and leave them by the front door.  :smt002

I live in a semi rural neighborhood in Santa Rosa.  The houses are pretty spread out and some of the driveways are long enough to where you can't see the houses. Over the last 20 years we've had several houses broken into and lots of stuff stolen. We try to watch out for one another.  The other day I pulled out of my driveway and there was a truck going down the street very very very slowly. He pulled off the road into the driveway of a vacant lot very slowly. I Pulled over and waited for him to come around the corner but he didn't so I went back to where he was.  I pulled out my phone and took a picture of his truck.  He got paranoid and started yelling at me  that he wasn't there to steal anything. So I told him " I guess you don't have anything to worry about do you?"
