I'm thinking of trying my luck tomorrow morning with sand dab in Santa Cruz launching from the harbor and I was wondering if you guys could give me a couple of pointers on where to go; left toward Capitola, toward the 1 mile buoy or right toward the wharf??? I will be listening to ch 69, just in case....

So I did go this morning but no sand dab.... Well I didn't even know where to go and I did catch a few small rock fishes that I obviously released. That's maybe why I didn't get sand dabs :-)

At least now that I got the Rhino Rack T-Loader, I can load and unload my Predator by myself without even killing my back.

3rd time OTW and I'm getting a bit more organized and starting to feel more comfortable.

Ch69 was quite thought.

good report..even if it is just to say they were scarce.....getting the yak wet and the loading and gearing running smoother is a big deal enough...too bad on the dabs...I got one tiny one weeks back off the MB aquarium...same spot where weeks before you could catch em two at a time till you got bored and had enough to cook...the next time I got 0...well one tiny one...I think they  move around feb-march????????never got skunked before there

I usually do pretty well on dabs in me boat in Monterey but I'm usually in 200-250 ft water and more towards the point.  Usually catch em 10-12 at a time and bigger ones than in the shallows.  Moss is even better and bigger too. Usually catch all we want in a couple hours.

as other posts have indicated, it is the depth that seems to limit dab success. It can be tough to paddle out to that depth in the north of SC area, and I've never done well fishing for them close to Santa Cruz, but have always gotten my fill down in Monterey.
200-250FOW seems to be the most productive.

I was in 40 to 50' of water... 200' in SC will be far, so maybe next time I should try Moss or Monterey or go with one of you guys :-)

maybe this is what I need to try-going deeper- I will have my F-finder/depth finder set up one day soon...surf fishing and getting ready to dive has slowed my sand dab paddles to zero....
