I didnt know there was a size limit for greenlings but I just checked out the dfg website and for sure its bigger than the minimum 12 inches. Definitely gonna have to memorize those size limits for next time and have pictures of the rockfish that are no keeps. I saw two guys spearfishing on boogie boards around the area I was fishing looked like a nice calm area for newbie ive been thinking about trying that out sometime looks like crazy fun

I made a cheat sheet by going onto Ca DFG and printing color pages of the no no rockfish section and the boundries for MB and carmel to point sur on the other side...cut off all the excess paper and borders...then put them back to back and used clear tape to join the dge...two sided boundries one side and no no fish(only 3-4 rockcod really)on the other ..than took a finepoint sharpie and wrote in a open area seabass-stripper-ling-redperch-cabazon-and halibut  written very small in a row and next to each fish type, how many you can keep and how long....took it to the u,p,s store and they laminated with plastic for 2-3 bucks...
final product is a two sided 8x8" water proof /blood proof  little color card for my pfd vest pocket or tackle that has come in super handy and has been great on the water when other kayak folks are saying things that seem in question to me, and the card shows the fish and the regs...you know where guys are like you can keep 3 or keep it they are 14"...greenling was one and whitefish was one that no one one day could answer...also the small written row part I added with the main fish and their size and min. inches has been a excellent refresher and a good study otw....

I like the idea of the color card from info off the DFG website.  Rockfish opens soon and I want to be safe with the take.    Thnx

so these pictures...(shitty lighting)...show the well worn cards I used my first kayak /rockfish season...the larger one was from Outdoor world  sporting goods but is also available on line(rockfish i.d card) i think.
The large card is awesome because it shows a lot of fishes in color ...sizes/ life spans...age at different inches and breeding patterns as well as number of eggs that fish can lay each season by it's size and age for each type of fish...also ranges by seasons /locations/ depths...it does not mark/show on the pages which fish are protected and I added a sharpie marker scribble next to the fish that are "no no's".
I used the larger pro fold up to see the numbers for egg laying at it's current size I caught and see age of the fish aprox and decide which fish to keep as I learned more and more. the big sheet was used on the water by me last season when in question and when guys in the next yak were like WTF is this...I had the sheet to answer folks.
The small sheet I made it showed MPLA's and where I can and cant fish from elkhorn to big sur and was made on my printer then two sheets were put back to back and taped edges and laminated at the u.p.s box store...
the home made i.d  card will be made better again this year(write clearer and ad some regs) as I now have more info I need to add...but for a first time effort this card was 100% great out in the boat..shows the major no no fish...shows size and limits on most fish....it cost me 3 bucks to make mine and the big one cost 6-9 bucks at stores....

Nice looking little cheatsheets, I did smething similar by trimming up one of the laminated RF guides.

The MLPA maps you used look like they have better definition than most of the ones I've seen, do you know the link to those particular maps, or can you just point me in the right direction?

I didn't know folks were so turned off by eating Greenling - I think they're great fish!! Nice long fillets, easy to cut up, etc. I catch a lot in Mendo while camping, instead of frying I'll lightly season and wrap in an aluminum foil 'burrito', sealed to keep the steam in, and set them on the stove/camp fire for a few minutes per side. Awesome eating, and more meat on them than small rock-fish. Was so stoked to see that they're part of the 10 RGC bag limit (I think they used to be only 2 per day?).

I think i used these and played with zoom on % of pic on my printer...

I used these books in my first season from knowing really nothing  week one to being able to answer questions for folks by the end of the season...and many times I took out my home made regs and areas sheet to check what someone was saying and found it to be wrong or that they had blurry version of off limits lines etc...or were pointing out to see in the wrong direction of the extended closure colored areas etc...
