Yesterday I went to the south jetty with my friend Adrienne and our 5 dogs. I packed perch gear and some mooching rigs as well as a couple of swim baits. I had shrimp, herring, squid, and clams for bait. The ocean side was too windy so perch wasnt on the menu so we proceded to find a spot on the jetty fishing in the bar. On the way out a fellow fishing pro, Lonnie aka Flatwater from Humboldtuna.com stopped me to say hi. We found a spot just past the large pole around number 60. I tied my mooching rig with the hooks hanging about 8" from the swivel with the rest of the leader hanging about 3 feet with a 2 oz pyramid weight. I started with some CC herring, but could not get a bite so I put on a whole squid. After awhile the squid was hammered hard so I picked up the rod and it kept pulling drag and bringing me into the rocks. It was stuck and every minute or two more line was being pulled out. I hopped around on the rocks to the left and my right trying to pull it loose. After about ten minutes it swam free and I brought it in on a rock where I could land it by hand since I didnt bring a net. Right when the bite happened Belle the long haired golden datsun fell in the water trying to keep up with Buddy and Miles. Belle was calm and was rescued without harm. The ling cod was a solid turquoise at just under 26". It fought like a much bigger one as the 25"-30"ers usually do. After not getting anymore action for awhile we decided to take the dogs for a walk to the beach at the east end of the south jetty where Eric Abking launches for HBO trips. On the walk back, Buddy saw a jack rabbit and the chase was on! All 5 dogs joined in and chased the rabbit to the rocks. I thought for sure we were going to be making rabbit stew for dinner since the little datsuns and the rest of the dogs dissappeared into the rock crevices. Mles had the rabbit trapped and kept barking, but it knew better than to come out. We eventually got Miles and Belle to come out so we could head home to to prep the fish for dinner.
The ling cod was clean and delicous prepared blackened with steamed asparagus, whipped sweet potatoes, and a baby kale salad.
I cant wait to be hammering the lings in the kayak soon.

A lot of memories of fishing those jetties  :smt003.  Hopping along the rocks throwing Texas-rigged flukes and tubes can take you far on the south jetty.  But the big baits such as herring or a whole squid tend to get the big guys more interested.  Nice turquoise ling you got there Rob!
