Question: If I am spearfishing from the shore and return with my take, do I need to have my fishing license on my person or can it be in my car? (William H.)

Answer: Persons diving from a boat or shore may have their license on the boat or within 500 yards on the shore, respectively (FGC Section 7145).

That's a good one Howard.

Because I know that reg I often leave my license on shore if shorediving. But take it on yak if diving off yak.

However, my understanding is that if you are taking abalone you need license and report tag in possession, no matter if diving from shore or boat.

Hello peeps, I want to start spearfishing! I want to know if there's someone can show me or teach me of what are the things that I need to know. They say diving fishing is fun and challenging and I am curious. Any information is highly appreciated. Thanks brothers and sisters

Even for abalone diving they can be on shore, Jim.  500 yards, and no more.

I know there were some recent posts on the subject of spearfishing and equipment.  It is so fun.  After reading some old posts if you still have questions post up and you will get replies.  This is only my first year, so I am still learning things.

Ever up in mendo area and want to go shoot some fish let me know.

You could have your license on shore, but are meant to have your report card in immediate possession....

I hate the way this is worded:

Quote
Persons diving from a boat or shore may have their license on the boat or within 500 yards on the shore, respectively (FGC Section 7145).

I think they should make it clearer and say "persons diving from a boat must have their license on the boat, and persons diving from shore can have their license within 500 yards on shore".

The respectively thing could confuse people...

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, English can be tough.   :smt044

I think it was written when licenses were paper and guys were using float tubes, and it hasn't been rewritten since.
