Love the silent auction idea to benefit HOW and PIF, this is what is so great about NCKA. Not just fishing and friends and gatherings, but helping those in need too. Thanks for the inspiration.  I'm building a rod to add to the list--fast action/light in the hand swimbait/jig rod with some real backbone to coax that big ling/halibut off the bottom. Wrapped in GS8 colors--which just happen to be Giants colors too. More details to follow, here's a sneak peek.

Have been kicking around some ideas with Abking for the last few months and decided to add a fun fund raiser to GS8 to benefit Heroes on the Water (HOW) and Pay it Forward (PIF). Instead of the usual lottery, we decided to try a silent auction format. The auction will occur at the event. If you have items to donate to the auction, send me a PM. We are requesting that the minimum retail value of the donated items to be $50. 100% of proceeds will go to HOW and PIF.

Heroes on the Water: Helps our Nation’s warriors and veterans from all branches of the United States military unwind using the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. What looks like a day trip of paddling and fishing is in fact something much deeper and long-lasting. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=46.0

Pay it Forward: Helps fellow kayakers who are battling cancer and supports cancer awareness. It began in 2010 as a grass roots effort to support a fellow kayak angler, Joel Lotilla (Mooch) who was battling metastatic cancer. Joel lost his battle with cancer in 2013 but his spirit and PIF live on. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=43.0

Thanks! Scott

Master rod builder Gelbyak / and I are joining forces to present a custom kayak rod for the GS8  silent auction as our contribution to PIF. This rod will be specifically  designed for GS8 / Shelter Cove fishing.

The blank will be a Batson, Rainshadow, Saltwater Live Bait Blank. Model RCLB70L which is a 7 ft. one piece rated for 15 -30 Lb test and 3/4 to 3 Oz lures- The guides will be Fuji.  It's an E-Glass & RX-6 Graphite Blend. A Graphite butt and midsection For extra lifting power, and an  X-fast & responsive E-Glass tip. The manufacturer  mentions Albacore Yellowtail and Tarpon with this rod. It's light enough to provide for plenty of fun playing fiesty rockcod and has enough backbone to  turn a large Salmon or work a big Ling or Pacific Halibut off the bottom.
As a kayak specific rod it will have a shortened butt section and the trigger will be drilled for leash attachment if you so desire. There will be no metal parts to corrode in the salt. Similar to Scott's rod which has a sticker of a WSB on  it, this rode will have a Halibut incorporated into it

The kicker is that it's going to be a spiral / acid wrap rod.   The "Acid Wrap" -is another term for the spiral wrap. The term originated on the West Coast when one proponent of the wrap“Jim Racela” was said to have been on “acid” when he wrapped his rod guides not in a straight line, but progressively shifting over in a spiral fashion. The tip ends up being pointed towards the water like on a spinning rod. According to its proponents a spiral wrap results in a rod which will not twist under load of a big fish, particularly,  when it goes sideways and is therefore more stable, giving you have more control over the fish. I'm not a very good conventional reel caster, however the spiral rod reviews I've read claim they are more accurate casters.
There is less twist at the grip which translates to less fatigue in the hands and forearms, etc, during a prolonged fight. This type of rod is often popular with  anglers suffering from arthritis in their hands, and others who have back and shoulder ailments.

Not the best quality pics, but some of my rod showing the type of detail work you can expect from a Gelyak rod!

Can't wait to see it!

Silent Auction Format
Auction items will be displayed for a determined period of time on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Each item will have a bid sheet. Only bids recorded on the bid sheets will be accepted. When the auction ends, no further bids will be allowed. Winning bids will need to be paid in cash at the end of the event before claiming the item. Any item not bid on will be returned to the donor. If there are other items to be donated for the auction, see me before the start of the event. Thanks! Scott (Great Bass 2)

How to Bid
Take some time to browse the auction items displayed. Read the item descriptions carefully so you understand what is included. The item descriptions on the table represent the most current information available.
When you see an item you like, write down a bid by printing your full name, NCKA handle, contact information, and the amount of your bid. When bidding, please be aware that bids must rise by at least the minimum increments specified, generally $5.00 or $10.00. For example, if the bid increase is $10.00 and the last person bid $100.00, you may bid $110.00 or more. In addition, you may increase the bid by more than the bid increment if you would like to bid higher to ensure you win the item. Once you have bid on an item, check back periodically to see whether you have been outbid. You will then have the opportunity to bid again. Keep in mind that any bid you record could end up being the final bid. When you write down an amount, you are committing to buy the item at that price if you are the winning bidder. You will need to have to have cash in the exact amount to cover your bid.

Winning an Item
The highest bidder on each item when the auction closes, wins that item. A list of winning bidders will be announced at the end of the auction.
If you win an item, we ask that you pick up your items and pay for them in cash prior to leaving the auction. All sales are final and 100% of proceeds benefit Heroes on the Water and Pay It Forward.

Ok here it is
I think  Kurt / Gelbyak lost track of the hours he spent making this rod, and it was a lot of hours!!!  I'm just the Sugar Daddy. Kurt's the one who did the hard work, managing to build the rod while dealing with huge headache of having his house's foundation redone. Both are finished. The man need some time on the Salt. Let's return the favor and put him on some fish. Cause that's how we roll!
