Exactly, V-G.  It's all about being safe and warm.  Fishing success won't impress anyone if you come in cold, or worse...

Dress for immersion - this means that you could be in the water for an extended period of time without trouble.

Looking forward to fishing with you guys.   :smt001

Definitely Eric. I already have my farmer john suit for the Big pond but did need the booties. But now I'm going to look stylish at the lakes with my kayak pants. :smt003 And ditto to V.G. about saving up :smt003. I eventually would like to step up to a dry suit. That's gonna be a while though.... :smt004. Most definitely looking forward to fishing with you sometime Eric. You got some great posts that I have read and the pics are always great from your neck of the woods !!!!

Dress for immersion seems to be the commen phrase.  Being new to this also and the sf bay being my backyard I need to prepare for amcoldmwater swim.  My problem is I'm not the average size that so many of the items seem to fit.  Between 6'4" and 6'5" and around 235 tom240' makes it tough to purchase items, especially online where there are no dressing rooms.
Right now I am in the market for a FJ, boots, splash pants and top just to cover the base line, but I'm trying to read everything I can to get the right size.
If anyone can pass on some advice it would be very welcomed.
Thanks

I was really glad I visited the kayak store in Monterey. got there early and was able to spend some time asking a lot of questions for the type of clothing I needed for the specific outings in my kayak. whether it was ocean or lake. Shaun was very helpful. Was good I tried the neoprene boots because they  fit different than purchasing regular shoes. of course fit is everything. Plus kept the dollars in the local shop.

Thanks Alex,
I'll need to find a store near Benicia.  There is a new kite and paddle store here, but I think it's geared towards pddle boards.
I'll continue my online research a see if I can find a walk in that has a decent selection.

The problem is trying to determine the best way to go.  Wetsuit with splash pants and top, dry pants dry top, drysuit?  I must have read every post there is but it just makes it harder to make the call.  I live near the water of the Carquinez Straights, so I'll most likely spend a lot of time there, but what about the ocean?  I might find my way to GS8.  Each has its pros and cons.  Study long study wrong.  The more I read the more unsure about my decision I get.  I guess there is no " one size fits all ". It's up to the individual.  I'm a rookie and I don't want to go out and make  stupid purchases of stuff I really don't need.  There should be a list of basic stuff, type, model, etc. so guys like me don't end up with the wrong clothing, fishing gear, etc.
Maybe that's just part of the overall lesson.  If any one would like to share an idea or opinion of the gear I should focus on and the stuff I don't need, I'm all ears.  Or eyes....

Tcat what you need is a bigger wet suit, REI carries this one.

http://www.nrs.com/product/2219%20g/nrs-grizzly-wetsuit

I would not get the wetsuit jacket, I would get a semi dry jacket or splash jacket and
I would also get a pair of splash pants ( you can use in lakes, river, delta) so you don't get cold in the ocean with a pair of booties with a strong sole for walking.

Get a good fitting PFD.
