Me and the boys headed out to HMB last Saturday to harvest some mussels and enjoy the beach for the day.

There's something about walking around in the tide pools that just makes you feel like a kid again :smt001

Got enough for dinner and was able to enjoy the sunset while drinking a nice cold beer  :beer1

Had coconut curried mussels........yummy

Nice way to start the month  :smt002

Looks like a great day and nice photos of the kids. My boy and I went out of Trinidad bay 2-1-14 and I drooped him on a rock where he pilled us a pot of mussels.   Streamed them in a garlic butter IPA and salsa mix- man they were good.  When people post HMB up here they mean Humboldt Bay near Eureka CA but I think you are somewhere else- Where is your HMB?

HMB - Half Moon Bay

Nice catch, they are delicious. Nice to bring kids along, I need take my daughter to cath some in near future.

One thing puzzles me about these pacific mussels, the market bought mussels are half pink fleshed and half whitish fleshed, assuming some are females and some are males. But all the fresh gathered ones are pink fleshed, am I misunderstanding something?

I'm with you Tong.  It is my understanding that the mussels with orange tinted meat are mature females, and the white ones are immature females and males.

Perhaps the size of mussel you are tending towards harvesting are all mature females.  Are you selecting the larger ones?

Allen, I tried to pick medium sized ones as i was told they taste better than large ones and not as much work as small ones, but i always accidentally have some large ones and babies in the mix. They always come with the same pink color for me.

Seems like all I pull are the pink/orange color.  I also prefer the 2" and less size over the jumbos.

That looks like a lot of fun Antonio.  Way to get the kids out there and spend some quality time with their dad. I would like to join you with my kids next time you get out there. Please let me know, I never had a chance to experience that. Plus I would feel more comfortable going with someone who knows what he's doing.  Thanks for sharing.

Gino,
I can show you at GS8 the only problem is that they are out of season then. But I can point them out and show you the general environment that they are in.
They are all over the coast wherever there are rocky formations and best to harvest during low tide.
