Also....Lings are voracious rockfish eating machines!!  One could make the argument that by culling some lings spearos are helping the overall health of the reef??!!????

Wow! So does that count as one or two lings towards your daily limit?

Very nice! Way grind it out in the "middle of winter"!

On a side note (since someone else breached the subject), anyone else out there think we should have a slot limit for lings? Say, 22-30 inches?

I think this would really help out in the long run by letting the big mamas do their business.

I'd be down with that...but, man it is hard to gauge lengths while diving! Escpecialy when often you just see a head back in a hole....  :smt012

I don't know the answer but if I shot a 31 incher and the slot limit was 30 inches...then WTF do I do?   :smt009

Minimum length is easier....if it looks close to minimun length let it be...but max length? I think that would be tougher to figure out??

I like the idea though.  :smt001

BigJim-

Just for the sake of discussion... it might make sense for spear fishermen to be exempt from the upper limit. I think the number of rod and reel anglers FAR outweighs the number of divers, so it probably isn't quite as critical to regulate them.

Forgive the dumb question (not a diver)... How's that work anyway? Shoot first, measure later? How many short lings do you think get shot, measured, and left dead? ("Never happened")

Yeah, I agree that theoretically it makes sense for spearos to be exempt from upper slot limit if there was one...but I could see the other side of the argument as well....we can shoot Lings year round now, during the time of year when the big mamas are in doing their business and Hook and Line is closed from boats...so...

I'm sure it happens occassionally that divers shoot an undersized fish by accident....what I have always been told is that if it looks borderline legal to let it be...when you see a legal sized one you know cuz it looks a lot bigger and scarier.  :smt002

I dunno the answers, and doubt any chnages will actually happen anytime soon, but if they do I would be curious to see how it all plays out for both hook and line and divers.
