In light of an extreme water situation & worrysome outlook, I wanted to see what others are doing/have done to conserve?  Not looking to make this a battle discussion over ones efforts to conserve vs. anothers, gov't, etc...  ....  looking for group ideas on a household level.

We are on a private well that serves our house/property.  Our worry is running dry since "municipal" water is not offered in our area yet.  We started some time ago taking some proactive measures.

Share some of your conservation ideas?

Whats your property like? I would look into containment options. A couple of 2500 gallon tanks will be about 2k but thats a good amount of reserve. A cheaper option is a water bladder they range in size from fitting in a truck bed (250 gallons) to 10k gallons. The nice thing about these is you get a lot of storage for less money. They are long however (30ft for the 10k) but narrow and short. 10k is a lot of piece of mind, but if things get dire even 2k gallons will go a long way. 60 gallon drums under the spouts want amount to much. You could run all your spouts to fill the big containers, or fill it from the well when its wet.

Although I live on property with my own well, I still try and piss outside as often as possible. Saves a bunch of water.. :smt003

Got the other half of my system trained to go when I get to work.  Saves at least 5 gallons a day! :smt005

For real. Watch out for neighbors if you live in town. I heard that you can become a registered sex offender if someone unwantingly catches you taking a piss.....That would suck big time.

all water from veggie steamer & French press goes to the plants around the house.

Yeah, I've been thinking about putting a bucket in my bathroom and filling it while letting my shower warm up.  At least some of my plants will get some water.  I think I'll do that right now.

Linda and I started doing this for the trees we just planted.  We are also rinsing our dishes in a tub and saving the rinse water.

If only there's a cheaper and more efficient way of turning sea water to drinking water..

I've had my yard irrigation off for the past 3 months, while many of my neighbors are happily dumping water on the ground.  My lawn may be a little browner than theirs, but it's not going to matter when they are all brown next summer because we're on water rationing.

-Allen

Same here at work...turned off the sprinklers in the early fall. My lawn is just slightly browner than the neighboring buildings lawns who water every day it seems. The only problem I see is if they want me to cut back 25% I will have to drive to the local Starbucks to use their toilet.

I hope those of you who are flushing at work or Starbucks understand that it only helps us here if you work and buy your coffee out of state.

I gotta do this too in the kitchen.  This is the farthest run for the hot water and I am always first one up.

Well, in my case, it isn't a gallon saved as I'm already not watering my outside plants.  I suppose I could use that water to wash dishes instead.  Or shoot, since the bucket is already in the bathroom, I could just flush the toilet with it!!!

We've done that too.....  The amount of water we use monthly to water all the outdoor plants doesn't add up to 20 gallons.
