It does if it's too windy to get on the water and fish.

So is it too early to ask what the water conditions and weather is looking like for this???

Looks ok on the first gfs run out today.

I feel it's too early, but thanks for that image, Doug.

We can start getting some confidence in forecasts 7 days prior, IMO.  Stormsurf should give us a good indicator of trend and potential swell size.

Not to curse us, but it's been fishable about 80% or more of the season so far!  Today was out of this world.   :smt004

Keep your fingers crossed.   :smt001

Oh yeah, the 16 day gfs model has very low confidence.  But we are starting to get forecasts, its all part of the build up and anticipation :)

I have only targeted pacific halibut a few times out of Shelter Cove.  I tend to hit the 200ft+ water.  Yesterday no one at the Cove got a halibut.  Many spiny dogfish sharks were caught.  I caught one around 6ft that broke the tip off my Trevalia and then broke the line taking a brand new $40 halibut rig with it.  Shelter cove is the only place I have caught the spiny dogfish sharks.  Maybe they are in closer...  I got some more good leads where to get them from the local commercial fisherman Sammie.  I wont give that info up yet :smt044, but I can tell you that the best crabbing would be in 70ft of water out in front of the airstrip.  Male crabs have been hard to come by here up north this year so you got to work hard to get them.

We didn't get a picture of the big one, but this one was 39".

I spoke to the owner of the campground recently - Jack Sanford.  He's a great guy and has been really accommodating to our needs for years.  I misspoke to say the camping in the group area is $20 each per night - it's $22, and that took effect last year.  Also, that deal is only for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.  If you're staying at the campground other nights you'll have to work that out with the campground.  If you need more info you can call them - Shelter Cove Campground and Deli - it's in Google.

Jack has always been generous with the group area, hoses for us to clean gear outside at dedicated tables, and now he's allowing that we'll have the awards potluck there at his new pavilion right outside the deli.  Jack has these concerns, and I need everyone to please help get the word to others in the campground and at the party:

- NEVER clean fish in camp - there's a fish processing area right at the top of the ramp access road.
- NEVER leave fish carcasses or partial carcasses in the campground trash or anywhere in the campground.
- DO NOT clean wetsuits or other gear in the showers/bathrooms - there are outside hoses and dedicated areas provided for it around the camp.
- DO NOT fail to be up front and responsible about paying your share to the campground.  Anyone who skates on paying is making the club look really bad.  Don't get banished from GS!  (I'm feeling all mean and nasty!   :smt003)

Regarding GS8.1, no one signed up, so it's a smashing success!   :smt005  (not kidding)

That means I have 10 XL blue shirts with the same orange ink that the black tourney t's have, and they match the hoodies which are blue with the orange.  If you want a shirt they're $20.

That's it for now.  Thanks for tuning in.   :smt001

So you're saying you plan on fishing from the middle of a large kayak party raft  :smt044
You should post a link to that video again. Definitely in my top 10 NCKA moments!

A few flounder have been caught from shore during GS. I'm thinking I'll make a shallow water drift parallel to the southern beach shore, Thurs or Friday, to see if I can pick up some. We used to catch them up to 6-8 pounds. Anybody had luck at Shelter kayak fishing for Starry Flounder.

I caught a 24" starry flounder in 60 ft of water while trolling for salmon and I wasn't on the bottom.

Already done. We jumped from third in saltwater back to our regular home at 1st passing the Bridgeport guys who have already started catching rockfish.  Quotas for rockfish should be filled for our team after GS8.  Maybe salmon too and of course sand dabs.

Wow, almost 700 posts about this event on this thread alone, must be a little excitement here ;0)
Can't wait, heading to the cove in just over a week and even the wife can't stop talking about getting to the cove.
She asked what bring for the pot luck, and I couldn't find the thread. Is it just me or are we missing a pot luck thread?
Either way, getting excited and having a hard time sleeping.

Heading to Shelter Cove in 10 days

See ya there,
Eric / Yakhopper
