so my neighbor just gave me an ocean kayak Yak Board. my question is, is it going to be ok to rock fish and freedive with? I know it is not the one I will use forever but will it work until I can get the one I really want?

Do I send the money and customize it(add pole holders, ect.) or just leave it as is?

Agreed. I had one and at 200lb and that was without and tackle I was near the limit. Maybe in place of a boogie or banks board for freediving

Sarge,

I have an OK BigYak which is only slightly bigger than the Yak Board:

http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/single_kayaks/big_yak/

I have had a TON of awesome adventures over the past 5 years both using rod/reel and diving on the BigYak and still pull it out for quick paddles or when my other yaks aren't available for whatever reason.

Here are the pros of a small yak in my opinion:

-Lightweight! Nice and easy and quick to load/unload and get down to the water.
-Stable and simple.

Cons:
-Harder to paddle long distances
-Limited weight capacity
-Limited storage

But honestly, I think if it floats you and your dive or fishing gear, get out there and have fun with it until you come across a better option!

Sincerely,

Jim

Not a yak to be rockfishing from.  I picked up EWB's YakBoard for my kid, it works great for him at 45lbs.  I put my buddy in it who is around 220, the entire mid section of the yak was under water with just the bow and stern sticking up....was fine on a hot summer day out at the lake, but there is no way I'd do anything other than play in the surf or lake on a hot day.  But a fun little boat just to play around and get wet on!
