I made another trip out here today to fish for sturgeon where Prospect slough and Liberty cut come together. It is a great shortcut to fish there. By staying on the water for most of 12 hours I was able to use the shortcut both coming and going. I took a slightly different route from the launch out to open water. It is a little less direct but the waterway is wider and less overgrown. I will use this new route from now on. The photo shows the updated route.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

I fish prospect slough all the time. I fish in 40ft for sturgeon and cast lures at the liberty island break into prospect for stripers. I go in a boat. Haven't gone out in my kayak out there. Be aware that you can easily get an oversized 8ft sturgeon in prospect. My uncle got one and it jumped 3 times! I wouldn't want to be in a kayak with an 8ft sturgeon jumping!  :smt003

The last large sturgeon I hooked (estimate 60"plus) did attempt to jump right under the yak, hit it  a glancing blow and so hard that it almost knocked me over. It ultimately escaped as I was trying to snare it (old regs) and one hook got caught on the snare which tore the other loose.

So in short, it can happen.

One of the the largest sturgeon I have ever seen jumped in prospect slough. Had to be at least 300+lbs. Seen a few 200+ lbs jump out in big cut, but this prospect fish was twice their size.

This is where I did a lot of duck hunting. I usually take the southern cut to open water but there are so many ways through with a kayak at high tide. Good luck!!

What do you consider to be the southern cut? I know power boats come into parts of the flooded area, so some parts must be deeper. I have been crossing pretty much in line with the old road that goes over the bridge.

See that attached map.
I often hunted some of the hard pan areas/points more south when I had my yak so my dog had something to sit on besides folded over tules.
Great place to explore.

I'm going tomarro
Where are you going. There is a lot of flood waters raging through the Liberty Island area right now. I was down there a week ago and decided not to launch. Check my "High Water" post to see photos and video of the area.
